Saint Hubbard and the Dragon FLASH!! Ron Hubbard says in effect: Dianetics will cure atheism and is being adopted by many churches. Chew that one good. His little cult is getting up steam now. Swank HDQ in Jersey and offices in NYC. $500 per month for the "master" who just tackled Los Angeles to set up a branch. A recording of a two-hour speech he made there was played here to 150 disciples at the Dianetics Cooperative (chief faction in SF.) The chat was good showmanship. Good voice and jivey delivery. Fast flow of wise cracks interspersed with damn little solid content, and a goodly array of the usual unsubstantiated claims. Says he: Only one out of each thousand letters received is unfavorable. Every psychiatrist examining Dianetics has come out on our side. Dr. Frederick Schumann, eminent political scientist, is a convert. Between Dianetics and religion there is no conflict, only sweetness and light. Leading churchmen are adopting Dianetics for use. In fact, Dianetics is the key to immortality. Non-believers are altered and dianetic treatment can restore their faith in religion. Amazing! That's what we think. The first statement leaves us skeptical. We might even be tempted to classify the second as unfactual. We cite Dr Frederick Wertham as one prominent example to the contrary. As for Dr. Schumann, we do have a lot of respect for that man. On the religious subject -- well, we just wonder if Campbell also feels that way. At least the RC church can thank god it now has such a powerful ally as Hubbard... The speach included several announcements, such as that a periodical publication is now available from the Foundation. Hubbard tried to ring in a grand finish by showing off that "it works." He had apparently brought a clear all the way from Boston but the demonstration fizzled when stage-fright prevented the girl from really performing. All she could say was that she felt better every day since "taking the cure" however she was totally unable at the time to demonstrate any feats of memory. But Ron was a capable enough showman to keep most of the audience from feeling let down. $$$$ % dianetics % $$$$ RENASCENCE #1 finally out. Four months ago, the editorial board of the GGFS magazine, RENE, turned twenty pages (20,000 words) of material over to Hans Rusch to get printed. Hans, a young man who had connections, said he could get a cheap job fast. That was late in April. Things --2--
