American Officers Club of Mayen American Forces in Germany Mayen, Rhineland - Germany December 4 Dear Miss Williams- Hope this reaches you before Christmas so that you will know on that day that I am thinking of you and hoping you are having a Merry Christmas and on New Year's day as well as the rest of the time I'll be wishing you a Happy New Year. Your last letter was somewhat surprising to me. But I guess there's real logic in your remark about getting out of the Army or rather your suggestion of staying in - "After all, why not?" Things on the outside don't look especially attractive from where I am, I'll admit. There is a bare chance - although not a very big chance, that the list of promotions expected to reach here about the time this letter reaches you - may include my name. That chance makes things interesting even if there were nothing else. But I have lots to do. I'll enclose a copy of an order that reached me the first of the week. It may not mean much to you but it means a lot to me. I take over the duties of "Railhead Officer" and handle all the rations, forage and fuel that comes to the regiment as well as my Sales Commissary, and in addition establish a new office to keep a third set
