Sixty-one percent of the teachers, however, reported having only one Negro pupil in their rooms.1 In fact, the number of Negro children in the schools must represent only a small part of the school population. In September 1949 the total school enrollent was 4,987. No figures were given concerning Negro children. If the school population resembles the total community population, there were possibly not more than 50-60 Negro students in the school at the time of this study.
