WOLLHEIM Stirring Stories For years past, as a fan, I had longed for a magazine that would publish only such stories as were truly different from what had gone before. There were brief periods when it seemed as if some magazine or another had accomplished that -- the period of early thought variant Astounding -- but each time the magazine in question slipped into stereotyped ideas or forgot itself as soon a it thought it had built up its audience A science-fiction magazine of today, it be worthy of the field should be one in which every story is not only well-written but presents ideas not before used. It should endeavor in every way to keep off the deep ruts worn by its predecessors. Such a magazine, I have always felt, would be supported by ever-increasing numbers of readers. Robert W. Lowndes Tales of Tomorrow The keynote of the new issues of Future Fiction and Science Fiction Quarterly is variety. We are looking for well-written stories of evry type and very definitely are interested in new writers. Right now, your editor is engaged in a campaign of information-gathering, roughly --trying to find out just what in Future Fiction's old issues (and that category extends right up to the one on sale now) pleased readers & what did not. We have, we think, made a reasonably big stride ahead with our covers and the interior artwork. However, we'd rather not guess about all this. If we are going to make Future Fiction a magazine you'll be eager to own, then we need th assistance of all fans -- & that means you. Yes, this is an appeal to letters to the editor. You fans, we have consistantly maintained, are the experts on science-fiction; if a story meets th approval of a majority of U, (continue these items on page 5) FREDERIK POHL Astonishing Stuff Fans should bear in mind that these are slow times for magazines. For these reasons, Astonishing Stories an Super Science Novels have been going easily, carefully sounding out the markets to determine what the readers want and how best to deliver it. You have all noted that changes in these magazines -- principally in the alteration in Super Science Novels is designed to bring you good writing and original ideas in novels, for those of somewhat better taste. There was, we felt, a demand for the longer novel. Novels are what originally made science-fiction, and it is they which are remembered longest. We differ, in that sense, from the other magazines catering in novels: ours aren't the usual type. Thus, we are very interested in what your reactions will be to Lyle Monroe's remarkable "Lost Legacy" [photo of a man] [photo of a man] [photo of a man]
