Page Two FANTASY NEWS FANTASY NEWS is published every week by William S. Sykora at 12 [Bee?] Street, Valley Stream, N.Y. Editor: Will Sykora Associates: Jimmy Taurasi, Sam Moskowitz, Mario Racic, Jr. Rates: 3 issues 10[cents], 9 issues 30[cents], 30 issues $1.00, 52 issues (1 yr.) $1.50. Editorial by Will Sykora. FANTASY NEWS has published 19 printed issues beginning with no. 96 and ending with no. 114. This great improvement was accompanied by no increase in subscription price. It was thought that the better reproduction would result in a really tremendous increase in circulation hence an increase in the advertising rates was instituted. Although production costs increased more than 400% it was hoped that a greater income would at least cover expenses. 200 copies of every issue were printed, of which every single copy was sent out, either to subscribers or as samples to induce stf readers to buy FN. At the rate of 3 issues for 10[cents], 200 copies if all were sold would bring in $6.67. Postage on these would amount to $2.00 under our postal permit. Envelopes would come to about 25[cents]. Standard printing costs for a sheet of this size and amount of composition are about $15. We were fortunately able to get a much better price. On an average, we were able to obtain one dollar ad per issue. The income was therefore approximately $7.67, but the espenses were more than $15.00, representing a net loss of about $5.00 per week. To most science fiction fans this amount of money would constitute quite a fat weekly salary. The conclusion is obvious. Either we must raise the subscription price of FN, or else we must return to the cheaper but (next column) FAN MAG REVIEW by Harry Warner, Jr. POSTAL PREVIEW: nos. 18 & 19. In order to keep on printing FANTASY NEWS it would be necessary to charge 10[cents] per copy, three copies for 25[cents]. The question then arises: Do our readers want the printed foramt enough to pay 10[cents] per copy or three issues for 25[cents]; or do they feel that the news content sufficently makes up for the mimeographing as long as the price remains at three issues for 10[cents]. It is up to you readers. Enclosed with this issue is a post-card ballot. Please mark your preference on it.
