FAN-ATIC, Vol 1, No 2. March 1941. Page 11. [ad on right corner of page with a yellow illustration of a man holding a sign that reads "Read VOM!" additional text reads "READ SUN SPOTS. See Page 16."] EDITORIAL. by Charles (CAB) Beling We are extremely sorry to hear of the suicide of Earl Singleton. His death is a great loss to fandom. We wish to express here our sympathy both for his family and his many close friends. Although we never met personally, and had only a sketchy correspondance, he struck us as being one of fandom's greatest aids and supports. We are very glad to be able to be able to present, elsewhere in this issue a short sample of his excellent poetry, which has appeared in many fan and pro mags, including his own publication, NEPENTHE. This was the only all poetry fanzine in fandom. Again we wish to express our regret and sorrow. And as Jack Chapman Miske said in FANTASY FICTION FIELD ILLUSTRATED NEWS WEEKLY, "..... I can't think of anything to say. There hardly is anything." We wish to apologize for the lateness of this issue. It was caused by a case of flu and an abundance of school work. As this editorial is stencilled the cover has not been done, and since the hekto has been giving much trouble, we don't know whether the cover will be hektoed, as advertised, or mimeoed, or maybe no cover at all. So don't be surprised at any cover you see, or don't see. We hope and believe that this issue of FAN-ATIC is a vast improvement over the first one; both as to format and material. And the size too -- last issue had 8 pages, of which 2 were punk illustrations, and the pages were far less neat -- this issue has 16 pages of typing maybe plus a cover. We would appreciate any and all letters of comment. We want to thank all the people who have subscribed or traded their mags for ours. We also wish to give our sincere appreciation to the contributors of material. We needed it, we asked for it, and we got it. And especially do we want to thank 4sJ Ackerman. He not only subscribed but he is trading VOM, and as if that weren't enough he wrote the very interesting article that starts of page 3. Then he sent us a lot of green ad sheets. Unfortunately these could not be used as the Solar Press told us they couldn't mimeo on them without wrecking too many of them too put out the mag, so they are using some of the sheets that 4e had sent them, of which there were enough to mimeo on. The green sheets will be stapled in the mag at the end, as a sort of supplement. Thanks, too, to Joe Fortier for letting us reprint the Tucker yarn. For next issue we have on hand a long quiz by Hyman Tiger and Scott Feldman, this will be the feature item. Besides this we have an article on time travel by myself that was crowded out this issue. There will be much more, but I don't know just what at present. Probably the same departments as in this issue. Incidentally, we think that D.B. Thompson's new column is going to be a second "Stardust," if not better. And we think that you'll agree after reading it. ANNOUNCEMENT: The serial entitled "FEET STANKS", a take-off on Pete Manx, which started last issue will not be completed. The authors, de la Ree & Gaetz, don't want to. / So long until the first of May.
