Page 2 GET DOWN AND CRY BLOODY MURDER, just because ALL the Science Fiction events like Conferences and Conventions were held on the East Coast, with the exception of the Chicon?? They did not! That is New Fandom's story. However there seems to be more here than meets the eye. In short New Fandom put on a Convention in 1939. They were the big shots of that period. They were the High Moguls of fandom. We all jumped at their whisper. And because they were once "big-shots", they tasted POWER, and power tastes good. They want another sip of the same drink. I know. It feels good to play the big shot. I played AT it during the Chicon. And there is money to be made, which aint hay. I know. We made some at the Chicon. Then too, New Fandom's prestige has dropped badly since their mishandling of the Nycon through the medium of their "Exclusion Act." They have to do something to save that prestige, and do something quick. Hence another Convention. They want another finger in the pie. Of course we must remember that what was said at the Chicon, and the bills and motions passed, don't mean a Damn thing, IF any fan chooses to ignore them. After all the Chicon didn't establish any Dictatorship in fandom. Therefore, if any Tom, Dick, or Harry decided to hold a Convention in his back yard, he can do so, and the worst anybody can do, is to call him a skunk. If then, what is said by one group of fans can be disregarded by another, why in the hell is there such a fuss coming from the West Coast, and the rest of fandom?? Why not let these fellows have their bit of fun?? The answer is simply that their idea of "fun" just isn't cricket. Honorable people just don't do things that way. And how, you ask, does a Convention on the East Coast interfere with one in Denver?? There are countless ways in which a Convention on the East Coast can interfere with one in Denver. For example it will cause Eastern enthusiasts to put off any plans they might have to make a trip with a few cents in their pockets, to Denver. They would much rather have a few people who monopolize fan gatherings amuse them at home, than make the trip to Denver. They will naturally go to the nearest of the two affairs, and having gone to that one, would feel that they had their Convention going desires satisfied, and filled for that year. By this line of reasoning it is doubtfull of the number of East Coasters who would patronize the Denver gathering.
