LEIGH BRACKETT One of the most outstanding women in the Professional SF field, is Leigh Brackett. I met Leigh in 1937, in the old LA Clifton's Cafeteria era, when, at that time, the members saw a lot of her. She was one of the most intelligent wo-fans that it has been my pleasure to meet. Many of her stories were published in Planet Stories after that period. Leigh first started with the studios at Republic Pictures, wrote the original story and script for "The Vampire's Ghost". "No Good From A Corpse", a pocket-book published by Hand-i-Books, not Science-Fiction, but a who-done-it murder, attracted the attention of Producer Howard Hawks. He hired her to collaborate with William Faulkner on the script of the "Big Sleep", original story by Raymond Chandler. The picture, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, will be released near the first of the year. She did preparation work on adapting Irena Karlova's "Dreadful Hollow" into script form. The story is an out and out Vampire story, with no punches pulled. RKO and Columbia studios are now dickering for her services in scripting work. Although a small woman, Leigh is a dynamic bombshell, plus, with a mighty strong punch to her stories. Good luck, Leigh, you certainly deserve the best.
