PAGE (4) FANTASY-NEWS NUTSHELL REVIEWS by I.S. STEELER . . . . . . . . . . . . ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION: The current April 1941 issue contains two stories which can be highly recommended. THE STOLEN DORMOUSE by L. Sprague ie Camp, hits off in the vein that first made de Camp popular. Along the same style is DIVIDE AND RULE, it starts much smoother and cleverly. Characterizations are clear cut, future concepts are clever. Captial entertainment, judgein only on the strength of Capter one. MICROCOSMIC GOD by Theodore Sturgeon is first-rate stuff. Original to the nth degree it appeals to the intellect to a greater degree then any yarn in months. Though the powerful, vivid style that insured Sturgeon's popularity in "It" is not present thruout, occasional flashes break thru it just the right spots for greatest effect. A memorable story. COMET: The fourth number proves that Tremaine intends to keep his promise of continued improvements with every issue, and a return of those outstanding appealing science-fiction years that we like to call "classics". There is a classic of science-fiction in the 4th number of COMET. THE FACTS OF LIFE by P. Schuyler Miller, is a magnificently handled yarn in the tradition of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Fritz-James O'Brien. An idea unique in its presentation, reminiscent, as Tremaine, state of K.F. Ziska's remarkable "Succubus"/ Don't miss this story. [[underlined]] AMAZING STORIES June, this issue starts out with an excellent cover by St. John and ends with a super cover by the one and only PAUL at his best. BLACK PIRATES OF BARSOOM by Edgar Rice Burroughs is Burroughs best so far in AMAZING. Old time readers of Bourroughs will love this yarn. Inside illustrations by St. John very good. [[image]] IF IT'S ATOMIC POWER NEXT, WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? Could you survive in the world of "REBIRTH". . . . .? The discovery and release of atomic power to the commercial market at this time would mean a depression that would dwarf all past depressions. 500,000,000 men would no longer be needed to the world's industry. The one discovery which should mean peace security and surcease from toil for every single person on the face of this Earth would instead destroy half the human race. Wars beyond comprehension would rage, wars against dictators, wars for food, wars against science. . . . . . all with the inconceivable weapons of the bursting atom. [[underlined]] Why should this be, that the potential liberator be warped into such a Destroyer? Why is every technological advance, making possible increased production, the creator of yet [[underlined]] hunger and want? [[underlined]] WE HAVE THE ANSWER!! Join the PRO_SCIENTISTS!!!!!
