18 SPACEWAYS MY FIRST TWO THOUSAND MILES were trailing 7-2 as we went into the last half of the third inning, At this point Walt Daugherty relieved Korshak, and before Walt could retire the side, five runs cane across the plate, tying the ball game. Dale Hart set the opposition down in order at the top of the fourth inning. It had been agreed to call the game at the end of the fourth. So, as we came to bat in the last half of the fourth, the score was tied at 7-7. Dale Hart started things with a dynamic double to center field, and proceeded to third base as the next batter grounded out. There was the winning run sixty feet away from the plate; however; Hart was picked off third base for the second out, and the next man was retired also. So the game ended with the score tied at 7-7. The afternoon session consisted mainly of the bids by the various fans for the next convention site. Joe Fortier gave a good talk for San Francisco; according to Joe, in 'Frisco everything would be free. even the Mayor, a Mr. Rossi, officially requested the '42 affair for 'Frisco. Milt Rothman spoke for Washington, Walt Daugherty played up Los Angeles, and I suggested Philadelphia. The final voting showed an overwhelming majority for LA, with Washington, Frisco; and Philly getting only twelve votes among them, therefore, it's the LACon in 1942! Realising that it had been unofficially agreed that the '42 affair would beheld in the east, many of the LA fans did not vote. Walter Daugherty made the following awards for activity in fandom. Olon F.. Wiggtns was given the award for the best fan magazine; Roy V. Hunt copped the prize for being the top fan artist: Forrest J Ackerman won the award for his all-around activities, for his sincere help in all fan projects, and for everything he has done for fandom. As Daugherty remarked, "No one but Forrie could win this award". damon knight won the medal for being the funny man of scientific fiction. The awards consisted of small engraved medallions. At last the Honor Banquet! It might be mentioned that everyone admitted he or she got enough to eat—which is something unusual for a scientific fiction honor banquet! After the food was consumed, everyone was asked to say a few : words. Speeches were presented by Heinlein, Daugherty, Degler, Lowndes, Brady, and others. Brady's speech was an excellently delivered talk dedicated to Robert Heinlein. Several of the fans present had chipped in and purchased eleven books as a birthday present for Bob, and he was so moved by the entire proceedings that he could say very little. After the banquet, the usual gang of us got together and headed for a local Denver Dive, wherein Widner proceeded to slay everyone with his impersonations of various characters; his songs, and other things. A final session was held in Widner's hotel room: and that was all. the Denventlon was, in my opinion, the most enjoyable of them all, and I'm quite certain the LA boys will put on a show that will equal any of them. THE END SOLILOQUY by WALTER C. LIEBSCHER When one is alone one wonders Life is so inconsistent Full of so many uncertainties Would that I knew when I must leave this world So that I could go completely insane Live the last few days of my troubled life Like a—well, sorta like a flame Or better still a firecracker One boom—a brilliant flash And then— oblivion—infinity —eternity
