22, SPACEWAYS THE READERS ALWAYS WRITE the science fiction artist. Finlay has grown careless and his work has degenerated in accompaniment. Some attribute this to overwork, but were we to look back, not too far, we would see that he did as much and more, with far finer results. His cross-hatching is not shoddy, as is usually the care with this type, because of its fineness - and because of this very fineness, it is not suited to the science fiction story. Bok, too, has gone down, giving us more pencil work and less of the ink detail that he used to put in. I truly believe that this is one case where too much work has played a part. But he can make his coquil drawings just as attractive, without being pulpy ( this usually happens to the coquil-pencil work), as was his ink work. Rogers, on the other hand, has improved immensely, tho he has never equalled the interior work he did for Divide and Rule. He has the broad stroke (brush, I believe) that fits his drawings perfectly, no matter how much cross-hatch, to the science story. Still Schneeman is unsurpassable as, I believe, he will remain until someone far better than now appearing in this field shows up. Who can wait that long? Jack F Speer, 3416 Northampton N.W., Washington D.C., types: SnortSnortSnort's article contained a lot that looked of value, but I'd feel a lot better about it if he hadn't made that confession to never having sold a story. He has an excellent non-fiction writing style, tho, as displayed in this article. Give it 8. His characterization of Lowndes I'd like to frame and put up on the wall, except that nice people might see it as well as fans."....... Cynic's column indicates that the Singleton mystery isn't yet cleared up beyond the shadow of a doubt. Wonder how the thing broke. It's quite a disadvantage not getting all the fanzines, but not half as bad as if you did and had to find time to read them. I judge that some of the references in Cynic's column are to the Sun-Spots expose, which I didn't get. My info came from Kuslan, for no particular reason; he just out and said he supposed I knew by now that the SIngleton suicide was a fake, when I didn't, and consequently made inquiries of Rothman and you. Rothman was ignorant. Beacon Lite is worth 7"....... Rosenblum not quite up to standard. 6. Schumannn had best poetry in the issue. I waver between 7 and 8 for it, but have sworn on the Altar of FooFoo not to split ratings fractionally, as Widner would have us do. Say 8. "...... Thanks for the even margins on the Manifesto. Only misprint I noticed in it was "visitor" in the singular in the penultimate paragraf. As I recall, I originally wrote it that way, then decided that that sounded too much like the Greater National Capital Committee (sort of Chamber of Commerce) and inserted an s." Gee, you printed a thing or two from my last letter that I didn't write for publication, but I don't mind it that they did appear. Amelia Reynolds Long reports: The Dark Beasts: 8 Nicely written without resorting to "precious writing" as so many amateurs do. " Heathen! : 9. I'm sorry I can't give this 10, but it isn't written quite well enough. I liked its suspense element and its ironic ending. If there's a tie between this and something else for the prize, please raise my rating of it to ten." Paradise: 5, I can rate it only on its style, which is very good. The idea is not original. I don't imagine that Mr. Gilbert deliberately plagarized: but he's better be more careful about such things if he ever wants to make the prose." To Mr.Fort : 10 . The best thing in the magazine. Ray J. Sienkiewicz, 312 East Elm St., Scranton, Penna., says: You are to be commended for your effort to standardize various terms used by the fans. I agree with you on "stf." and scientific fiction. I have not yet decided what to do about "fmz" of "fanags". I agree very heartily with "fanzines" and "prozines" . You probably don't know this, so I shall tell you that the reason I coined "fanag" was to bring about a standard word for "fan-mag", "fanmag", "fan mag" or "fan magazine"- which were all used by various fans to describe the same article, a fan magazine. By the way, scientific fiction is abbreviated to stf,, to why shouldn't fanzine have an abbreviation? Perhaps "fz" would be a good abbreviation for fanzine. "Fz" would be called "fez" which is also what a Turkish hat is called. Anyway, fanzine could use an abbreviation. What do you
