SPACEWAYS 23 THE READERS ALWAYS WRITE suggest? ....The theme of "How To Be a Hack" is getting to be a subject for a hack, but good-friend Pumphandle is not a hack. Besides, I have a weak spot in my—somewhere in my—body for articles written to and for would-be writers. The article is well-written, slightly humorous, slightly informative and more than slightly interesting. Pumphandle pumps up to an eight point five. Poll Results: As you know, last issue contained contest material, winners to be determined by ratings. Eighteen sets received, from Mulrain, Jenkins, Beling, Shaw. Gilbert, Jones, Senour, Long, Chauvenet, Croutch, Farsaci, Swisher, Bridges, Schwartz, Evans, Rajocz, Avery, Speer, and Spencer; thanks everyone. Results show How To Bo a Hack leading everything at 8.5; so Mr. P. Snort, III will have his choice of either illustration or the pack of fanzines. Other articles rated: Designers Wanted: 6.5; To Mr. Fort: 6.4; Fans in South: 4.9; Ack-Dote: 4.4. Singleton's To Chloris received 7.5, to lead the verse. If he can be located; he'll get his choice of the two items left by Snort. If he's lost, Phil Schumann's Derelict wins the poetry section, having 6.6. Off for Mars got 4.7. Of fiction, Paradise is first, 6.9; Gilbert gets what's left, unless Singleton can't be found, in which case he has second choice since Paradise rates above Derelict but below To Chloris. Heathen! finished at 6.3 and Dark Beasts at 5.4. Of the departments (which didn't figure in the contest) letters topped, 7.8; Beacon Light next, 7.7; then Control Room, 7.1. Ads, if you want to count them, at 7.0; What They're About, 5.9, front cover, 6.7; back cover, 6.5. Issue 35 as a whole, we regretfully announce, averaged lower than any in almost a year; 6.58. Ratings are respectfully requested on this one, of course; a postal is enough, if you won't want to bother writing a letter. SPACE FILLER by ERLE KORSHAK The sun A boiling pot Of fiery flame; the stars Are spattered drops that spilled and fell Like rain. ADVERTISEMENTS GOLDEN ATOM BACK NUMBERS The Issues still available of Lylda would appear to be more valuable than ever at the present time since the stencils of the issues which we had been saving were completely destroyed during an unusually zealous session of house cleaning. However, the prices as given in the last edition of Spaceways are still in effect. We now continue the readers' report on Golden Atom. From TOM WRIGHT, editor of Dawn, La Moderne Annual: Sorry to hear that Lylda must go... This Issue is very swell, one of the best I'd say. The cover was dam nice, shows work. Finlay's little silhouette was swell. Do you use a silk sheet to get such solid black?? Korshak's piece had a little error; 'twas second Comet, not first. I liked it a lot, though. Rajocz, Fisher, both tops. In fact, the whole issue is good reading! I especially like the Favorite Stories section. Stars' cover is a beauty. More of this type please. I enjoyed it throughout, and was very pleased at the perfect mimeo work. From JOHN WASSO, JR., reporting also on the ninth issue: Golden Atom is still the best, despite Stardust. Truly the most glamorous of fan magazines due largely to the Lylda tradition behind it. Since this issue, the ninth, MAY be the last though I sincerely hope not, I'm glad that Charles Hickox gave a cover dedicated to tho old master Lovecraft. It's beautiful! No crude angles to his work! Hickox is the best of the amateurs and better than many professionals, much better than the recently graduated and highly overrated Hannes Bok. BUT, why didn't you give us a pictured impression of "Lylda", patron saint
