"Night and Day" {Rendering of conductor in front of audience with "S.U.I. SYMPHONY" written underneath and rendering of a woman clasping her hands in front of her chest} You'll soon discover that SUIowans don't spend all their time in the classroom and at the books. "Night and Day" SUI abounds with cultural opportunities. What better way to fill your free hours than by attending the many exhibits, lectures, concerts, and plays SUI offers? Just last year, SUI's cultural atmosphere attracted such big names as "The Limelighters," "The Chad Mitchell Trio," Vincent Price, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, and "The Four Freshmen." SUI has long been noted for its fine dramatic arts program. Those unable to participate directly in its work are fortunate in being able to observe its accomplishments when plays are presented through the modern facilities of the University Theatre. You may also want to attend the Studio Theatre, where plays written by students are often staged. Your appreciation of fine music will grow at the events scheduled by SUI's Music Department. The symphony orchestra, band, and University Chorus present regular concerts at the Iowa Memorial Union. Recitals and small ensembles will also entertain you with hours of listening pleasure. You'll hear celebrities from the national and international scene speak at least once a month in conjunction with the University Lecture Series. Entertainers, journalists, and diplomats are regular University visitors. Art exhibits will await your glance regularly at the Union, University Library, and Art Building. Union Board annually sponsors a photographic display, while art exhibits are housed in the Main Lounge all year around. In the Art Building you may look at paintings, sculpture, and other art objects, many by SUIowans. The University Library will treat you to a different display each month in the cases in its main lobby. The new State Historical Society Building features exhibits of interest to students of Iowa lore, and Macbride Hall displays a natural history museum on its upper floors and in its halls. In the free surroundings of the University, cultural opportunities are many. It is up to you to take advantage of the music, art and drama others have strived to bring to SUI. If you do, you may develop interests you retain throughout your life. 15
