Music {Drawing of bagpiper with bearskin hat upper right corner of page} During the football season the announcement, "Presenting...the Hawkeye Marching Band!" is greeted with a standing ovation from the student body. The band's fast, rhythmic cadences, popular tunes, humorous skits and traditional salutes to the visiting team will make you proud of SUI. Following the band on the field are the famous Scottish Highlanders. Composed of coeds like yourself, its drummers, pipers, and dancers make up the largest all-girl bagpipe band in the world. You probably don't know how to play the bagpipes or do the Highland Fling now, but the Highlanders take care of this with fee instruction for all accepted applicants. The group is regularly scheduled for guest appearances-including a European tour every fourth summer. As the year progresses, the concert band and symphony orchestra steal the spotlight with their presentations in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. Joining the orchestra at Christmas and Easter in the University Chorus, another major musical body on campus. A newer addition to the vocal scene is the Old Gold Singers, a small group of carefully selected performers who give popular concerts throughout the Midwest. Tryouts for these musical groups occur each fall and are announced in The Daily Iowan. Angel Flight This year a new organization was formed at SUI. Angel Flight is composed of SUI coeds on the basis of interest and interviews as an auxiliary group to the Arnold Air Society. Their purpose is to promote the Air Force and act as hostesses for the University. Free time of members is devoted to transporting patients at University Hospital. The Angels are on constant call for any event that my arise. Their wings are polished and ready to go! 20
