If your interest is music, explore the possibilities of the band, orchestra, University Chorus, or the Old Gold Singers. The all-girl Scottish Highlanders march with their bagpipes and drums, making music that is famous all over the country and in Europe, where they perform every fourth summer. Activities limited to women only include the YWCA, the Women's Recreation Association, and, of course, the Associated Women Students. Many Iowa coeds act as "Big Sisters" to handicapped children at the Hospital School. ROTC women's auxiliaries tap pledges for the Air Force Angel Flight and the Army Guidon Society, Departmental, professional, and mixed organizations such as Sailing Club and the Iowa Mountaineers desire your active participation. All students who enter into activities have a responsibility to the University, for it is primarily students who organize and plan the major functions such as Orientation, Homecoming, Spring Festival, and AWS Mother's Day Weekend. Activities are an excellent way to investigate the work behind the scenes of the University. Their value and quality are the product of your efforts. Additionally, an integral part of your well-rounded education is provided by your experiences in one or more areas. Cultural and Religious Opportunities... Cultural opportunities provide the perfect break from the routine of studying and extracurricular activities. At Iowa a wide variety of exhibits, concerts, lectures, and plays add another dimension to your liberal education. The University community can attend many varieties of drama. The University Theatre performances by graduate and undergraduate students rival those of professional companies. Selections range from classical theatre to modern productions. The Friday afternoon Studio Matinee offers less elaborate performances weekly. Original student plays are staged in the Studio Theatre. Central Party Committee presents popular entertainment. Last year U of I students were swinging to the sounds of "Satchmo" Armstrong, the Lovin' Spoonful, and Trini Lopez, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass performed in concert for Mother's Day Weekend. You appreciation of fine music will grow from attending events scheduled by the music department. Concerts, held in the Union, are given by the symphony orchestra, symphony band, University chorus, and the Old Gold Singers. Frequent recitals and ensembles provide you with hours of musical pleasure. Celebrities from the national and international scene speak at least once a month in conjunction with the University Lecture Series. Union Board sponsors many lectures and poetry readings. Art exhibits are presented regularly in the Union, the Main Library, and the Art Building. These experiences are available to you free or at minimal cost. Take advantage 15
