a February 28, 1972 Vice Provost Philip G. Hubbard 10 Jessup Hall The University of Iowa Dear Vice Provost Hubbard: Enclosed is a copy of the proposed Policy on Confidentiality of Student Records recommended by the Human Rights Committee. The Committee has studied this matter since your communication of September 20, 1971, when you shared the revised policy of that date. The conversations we have had with both you and Dean Cox have been helpful in better understanding the issues involved, and we thank you for your time and consultation. The Committee agreed to recommend the omission of the paragraph (found in the September 20 revision) about mailing grade reports to parents or guardians -- in keeping with the pending recognition by the State of Iowa of 18 year olds as responsible persons. Students accepted for University study who are under 18 years of age should have their records equally protected. The Committee recommends that the policy be communicated to deans, department heads, administrators, and faculty who may be in control of information in records so that it can be a guide for the confidentiality of information in all student records, wherever they are kept, not solely those in the Registrar's Office. We appreciate your thoughtful consideration of our recommendations for a revised Policy on Confidentiality of Student Records. Sincerely yours, Marian Sheafor Chairman, Human Rights Committee MS:bc cc: President Willard Boyd Dean Walter Cox
