34 BIJOU THEATRE CRITICISM WEEK OF OCT. 12TH, 1903. STEREOPTICON: Usual collection of interesting views; 6 minutes. MR. & MRS. BREEN: Garden in 4; 3 shows; 11 minutes. Man and woman in comedy juggling act; man clever with the clubs, and comedy fair; woman of no account; close with a boy, exchange of club feats. A very good opener. MARTIN & QUIGG: Street in one; 3 shows. Their usual talking, singing and acrobatic dancing act, without any change since last appearance here. Received a light reception and many laughs. 17 minutes. MUDGE & MORTON: Drapery in one; 3 shows. Man works as a German without any dialect whatever; comedy bad; woman very attractive, well dressed, and a very fair singer. Close on the saxaphone; went well; 16 minutes. VAN LEER & DUKE: C.D.F. 3 shows; 19 minutes, 4 minutes in one. Woman very tough, badly dressed, and unrefined. Man's comedy went very well; they earned a recall. POLK & TRESK: Palace in 4; 2 shows; 9 minutes. While doing many of the difficult feats in acrobatic work, they are below 2 a day standard. Their few attempts at comedy amounted to nothing. Received slight hand. SIMMONS & WHITE: Landscape in 3; 22 minutes. In their old act: "Git in De Band Wagon". Received many laughs; and nothing preceding them on the bill went nearly so well. Received not a very large hand on their close; act being quite long. ROBBINS & TRENNEMAN: Garden 2, close 1; 10 minutes; 3 shows. Man's singing went very well, principally because of the good selection of songs; possesses a strong voice, but very metallic, and his high notes are all nasal. The woman no vocalist whatever, and really a detriment to the act BELLE GORDON: Garden 4; 2 shows; 14 minutes. Nice appearing young woman; worked rather badly this-afternoon, missing many times; will probably be better and go better to-night. SMIRL & KESSNER: C.D.F., close in one; 17 minutes, 6 minutes in one; 2 shows. Man really does some wonderful tumbling turns; the woman a clever and graceful dancer - carries the comedy scenes well. Earned a recall, and in the close in with a dog aroused much applause and general laughter. A good act. MURPHY & WILLARD C.D.F., close in one; 2 shows; 23 minutes. In their comedy sketch: "Doughnuts", a budget of nonsense, which the man member of the team succeeded in making very amusing, and aroused general and hearty laughter and applause, earning a recall. GEO. C. DAVIS: Street in one; 18 minutes. George gives us the same monologue he has repeated over the circuit many times, with the single insertion of one new story. However, he went very well, and held his audience which was, no doubt, waiting for the lion act. MME. SCHELL AND HER PERFORMING LIONS: Garden in 3; 10 minutes; 2 shows. Using three animals, the cleanest and handsomest animals we have ever had. They worked a little slow to-day, but she has a very strong act. E.P. LYONS.
