40 Criticism of, Show Keith's Bijou, October 19th, 1903. STEREOPTICON: 10 minutes; usual collection of views, perhaps a trifle more interesting. CHERRY & BATES: Wood 4, 13 min. 2 men bicyclists; one straight, other hobo, comedian causing general laughter and receiving a good hand at the close. A good opener, and would make good in a later position on the bill. 3 shows. MUSICAL BENTLEY: Drop in one, 14 minutes, man working straight, playing a variety of instruments, winding up on the xylophone, "Poet and Peasant" which earned him a hearty recall. Good musical act, which went well and deserves a better position on the bill, which he will get to-morrow; he was booked quickly to fill a disappointment, thus accounting for his being placed so early. 3 shows. BERTINA: Garden in 2, close one; 8 minutes in all, 3 minutes in one. Neat little girl in dancing and contortion act, but who is growing too fat to move about gracefully and lightly. Went fairly well and will just about do in this spot, or earlier. 3 shows. EDW. I. BOYLE: C.D.F.3, close in one; 18 minutes, 4 minutes in one. Blind pianist and singer, whose selections on piano and singing were well received. I think his whistling of "The Mocking Bird" very tiresome, and that his act would be better off without it; the audience showed signs of impatience during its rendition, but his physical defects earn him a general round of applause at the close. 3 shows. PURCEL & BROOKS: Their own set, C.D.F., 3, closing in one; 16 minutes; 3 minutes in one. Man and woman in comedy sketch; went quite well gaining many laughs, and really good applause at the finish. 3 shows. COLLINS & HART: Wood in 4, 14 minutes. Grotesque acrobats, both comedy makeup. This went with a howl from start to finish, and was one of the laughing hits of the show. 2 shows. CROLIUS & ST. ALVA: Drop in one, 19 minutes. Man and woman in talking act. They gained several laughs, and went off to slight applause, probably less than any act that preceded it. They will not do in this position on this bill, and will be well shifted up on to-morrow's show. 3 shows. COAKLEY & McBRIDE: Street in one, 21 minutes. Two men in golf suits. Singing, dancing, and talking act. Dancing, especially, went very well and their talk was well received, but the comedy made little or no impression. It would be a good act on almost any position on the bill. 2 shows. BARROWS-LANCASTER & CO: Plain chamber in 3; 22 minutes; 3 men and a woman in a new act in this house, entitled: "A Chip of the Old Block" Through some error, they were billed here to do "The Jolly Jollier", but as Barrows explained, he has not done it for several months, and is not in a position to do it now. The new act went well here this afternoon, and to my mind it is considerable of an improvement on the "Jollier", and with a manly man in Lancaster's place would be a decided success. 2 shows.
