172 CRITICISM, KEITH'S BIJOU, FEBRUARY 1st. 1904. STEREOPTICON. Usual collection of views. 10 minutes. KENNEDY & JAMES. C.D.F. 15 min. close 1-- 5 minutes. A skit that has played over the circuit and which has been sufficiently criticized. It need only be added that little of their stuff was satisfactorily received to-day. While they extracted some applause there seemed to be no regret when the act closed. It might be called a fair opening act but nothing better. 3 shows. JOHN J. DESMOND. Garden in 4 10 minutes. This young man who played our show a couple of weeks ago returned to-day and got by with more satisfaction. This is doubtless due to the fact that he did not have to follow a bag punching act as he did on his previous visit. His muscular posing does not add any value to his act but his bag punching is rapid, clever and accurate. Gained considerable applause and closed to fair applause, even better than we expected. 3 shows. BEAN & HAMILTON. Garden in 3 10 minutes. 2 young men who seemed to impress the audience with their value by the aggressive manner in which they worked and their pleasing style. They did some difficult barrel jumping feats, not missing once, earning considerable applause throughout the act and got applause at the close. They could easily hold down a better position in our bill. 3 shows. ORCHESTRA. Usual good selections. 5 minutes. ANTRIM & PETERS. C. D. F. 14 minutes. close in one 2 minutes. Man and woman in slapped together sketch built for the purpose of presenting the mans imitations. While some of these imitations were up to the standard, neither of the 2 made any decided impression on the audience and closed to only fair applause. 3 shows. SYLVANO. Wood in 4 11 minutes. European equilibrist whose work is of itself commendable and was satisfactory to the audience to-day. He was handicapped, however by his property man who has the centre of the stage a good portion of the time but who did not seem to know his duties to-day, and some of his slow movements I feared would result in the act being guyed. Sylvano's good work and clever electric lighting of the set enabled him to get by very satisfactorily and to close to really good applause. 2 shows. RUTH MELTA. Drapery in one. 9 minutes. An attractive, well dressed girl billed as a coon song singer but who cannot sing. It may be that she was, and it did seem that she was suffering from a cold to-day, but if this is a fair sample of the class of work she offers she certainly cannot make good in the position she is now in she will be moved up for to-night and for the balance of the week. However, she gained a fair share of applause at the close. 3 shows. MR. & MRS. MURPHY, in "Why Doogan Swore off". Plain Chamber 22 minutes. This pair of performers who have previous to this time made a good impression here, presented a sketch which seemed somewhat similar to that recently shown by John & Emma Ray. It did not give Murphy the chance to show his comedy talent, which is well known he is the possessor of. However, the act was greeted with considerable laughter and applause throughout and at the close, but it is not on a par with the previous sketch presented by them. 2 shows. on the bill they have never gone better in this house than they did today and made a very satisfactory closer for us to-day. Their acrobatic work is rapid and accurate gaining them applause throughout and strong applause at the close. 2 shows. BIOGRAPH. A satisfactory collection of pictures, headed by the "Busy Bees" picture which did not particularly interest the crowd to-day. If the audience were well scattered with farming people, the picture would probably be better received but it was not to-day at any rate. 20 min. COMMENT. After the cordial reception of last week's good show, by comparison it may be said that this one is fully equal to it, being well balanced throughout, and even in the three-a-day section is very satisfactory. For this reason I look for our business to keep up without any trouble. E. P. LYONS.
