179 (M. J. Keating) Boston Show, Week of Feb. 8, 1904 Stereopticon, 3 shows, 5 mins in 1--Usual interesting collection of home and foreign views. Joseph Howard and Gussie Linder, 3 shows, 16 min. full stage--Too well known on the circuit to require comment. Makes an excellent opening act, and could even go further down in the 3-show section if necessary. Gordon Eldred, 3 shows, 14 min. in 1--Also well known over the circuit. Do not think he will ever get out of the 3-show section. Aerial Smiths, 3 shows, 9 min. full stage--Man and woman, working double, on flying trapeze. Excellent 3-a-day act. Murphy and Frances, 3 shows, 15 min. in 1--"Real coon" man and woman. First time here as a team. Went big and could go into the middle of the 2-show section, if necessary. Hodge-Hall and Company, 23 min. 2 shows, full stage--Three women and a man, presenting a farce called "Bill Blithers, Bachelor". Went with screams from start to finish, and is one of the best laugh-provoking skits of the kind that has ever appeared in this house. Also could go further down the bill, if necessary. Josephine Wilkinson, 2 shows, 13 min. in 1--Ladylike appearing young woman, tastefully costumed, and with a fair soprano voice. Was applauded for all her songs, and, all things considered, she is better than any straight singer we have had here of late. Waterbury Brothers and Tenney. 2 shows. 26. min. open in 4, close in 1--This trio of entertainers is too well known to need description from me. They received the first advance applause of the day, proving their popularity, and were laughed at all through their act. Winscherman's bears and monkeys, 2 shows, 15 min. full stage--This act went ever better than I expected, the audience being in good humor and easy to please. Apart from its novelty, it is an ordinary animal act, although it is nicely staged. Pat Rooney and Emma Francis, 2 shows, 12 min. open in 3, close in 1--Received a big reception, and their songs and dances were provocative of applause all through. Finished strong. Comment: The show is far and away ahead of anything we have had this winter, because of its excellent balance and the variety of acts. There is a contrast between almost every number in the bill. The worst feature is that bills of this kind cannot be duplicated more than three or four times a year. The audience was the largest we have had on the first day of the week for a long time; likewise the most enthusiastic and appreciative. From start to finish the show met with appreciation that made everybody thankful.
