Bob Cole and Rosamond Johnson, 2 shows, 20 min. open in 2, close in 1 -- These men got a round of applause when they appeared but they did not go nearly as strong as on the occasion of their last previous engagement. Their new songs are not so "catchy" as those with which they started off a couple of seasons ago, and I think it is largely attributable to the fact that they are aspiring to write a better class of music, something which eventually spoils all ambitious popular songwriters. Notwithstanding, they got a strong "hand" at the finish. Better cut them down to a single week and once per year after this. James O. Barrows, Lancaster and company, 2 shows, 20 min. full stage -- Presenting for the first time here a comedy sketch, "When Georgina was 18", which is not such a good vehicle as any of those in which they have appeared during past seasons. Barrows is the whole "shooting match", and his support does not call for any conspicuous ability. All the roles were satisfactorily filled. It sort of flattered out toward the end and only got a complimentary hand, but I think it will go better at night. Digby Bell, 2 shows, 22 min. in 1 -- Has a capital line of new stories and a couple of excellent humorous recitations. He scored a solid hit, notwithstanding the time occupied and received a most enthusiastic recall. I think, with others, that the use of his name has been sufficiently paid for, and that his salary should not be so large the next trip. Harry Gilfoil, 2 shows, 21 min. open in 4, close in 1 -- In his imitable character specialty, "Baron Sands", which is one of the most artistic bits ever offered in the varieties. Scored one of the hits of the show. The Mowats, 2 shows, 9 min. full stage -- Club juggling by a quintet of boys. It is a fast turn and takes rank with the best "sight" acts we play. It has not yet got the finish of the Juggling Johnsons, but they are hard workers and will eventually be just as clever as the better known team. Quartet Basque, 2 shows, 9 min. in 1 -- The woman of this team did not turn up, and we were obliged to play the trio of men. The absence of the lady materially reduces the value of the act, although they were encored for each number, it was nothing like what they received when last here, and they will have to be moved up the bill. Paul Spadoni, 2 shows, 18 min. full stage -- European juggler, whose work is known to the circuit and does not need any description from me. Went well in spots but could not be considered to have scored a hit. and that is not near past. The show may make good with the public, but I -----o-----
