8 New York Criticism -- May 7th, 1906 THE BURKES: Man and woman in a character comedy. Woman makes a pleasing appearance, but rather rough in her mannerisms with only a fair voice. Man carries the act with his piano playing which is very good. Alright as an opening act. 17 min. in two- 3 shows GRIFF BROTHERS: Ring artists. Mighty valuable for the three-show section. All of their iron-jaw work was strongly applauded. Fully capable of going down further in the bill. 15 min.-full stage- 3 HATHAWAY & SIEGEL: Formerly Hathaway & Walton. Woman makes a pleasing appearance with a good voice and a pretty fair dancer. Full as good as the other partner. Hathaway's dancing went very strong. 9 min. in one- 3 shows NEWMAN & KNOWLES: 2 women. Presenting a character singing number. Described in previous criticism. Received some little applause for the singing. The doll character created some few laughs. Alright for an early place on the bill and once over the circuit. 13 min.-full stage closed in one- 3 shows LES AUBERTS: Parisian Dancers. Did not go as strong as on ther former appearance. Just about got by to-day. 8 min.-full stage- 2 shows GAVIN, PLATT & "PEACHES." This act consists of man, woman and dog, which is "Peaches." They carry their own drop representing a gypsy camp. Woman portrays the character of a gypsy, -man that of a detective looking for the "stolen kid." Mistaken identity idea. Woman has a very pleasing voice and the man takes care of the comedy end fairly good. Act is already, if not placed too far down on the bill. 15 min. in one- 2 VAN DYNE & DEANE: In a one-act character comedy: - "The Envoy from Japan." The Jury treated this act rather cool this afternoon. They just about got by although it is a pleasing little singing number, if not placed on too late. Miss Deane makes a very pleasing appearance and has a fairly good voice, while Van Dyne is a slow worker. Act lacks action -- rather long. Will try and spruce it up a little and give them a little easier place on the bill to-night. 22 min.-full stage-close in one about 2 min.- 2 shows BARRY & HALVERS: Presenting the same act as they did before. This man will have to hustle around to get some new material. The Jury couldn't see them this afternoon. The only thing they recognized was his encore in one. 19 min.-full stage- close in one-2 shows
