3. CARL HERBERT, The Man of Mystery:- 15 min. in 2. 3 shows. Makes a very good showing. None of his magic stunts are new, but they seem to hold the interest fairly well. He is a young man, and seems to have the ambition to succeed. GENERAL REMARKS:- This is a good average Summer show, and will pull together splendidly after a day or two working. There were no transposition of the acts, as every one of the features seemed well placed. Hilliard will catch the box crowd strong, and we feel confident that there is good business in store for us for the balance of the week. SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT. (EVENING) SMIRL & KESSNER.-- "The Bell-boy and the Waiting Maid." Made good with the evening audience. Act about the same as offered here last October. Acrobatic work of the man is very good, and there was considerably applause. The close in one was especially commendable, the dogs which is introduced, winning a good many laughs. Rightly placed on bill. 17 min. cl. in 1. DIAMOND & SMITH.--With a crowded house this evening, these people were a genuine "knock-out." Diamond was compelled to sing four songs, and then after repeated curtain-calls, made a little speech. These people are so strong that there must be no doubt about our having them next season. They are A.A.1. for this house. The sequence of the bill is as follows:-- Herbert, Magician,...6.25 Jessica Cree...6.40 Alpha Trio...6.55 Stanley & Leonard,...7.12 Orchestra,...7.28 Smirl & Kessner,...7.33 Niblo & Riley,...7.49 Stanton & Modena,...8.01 Diamond & Smith,...8.20 Jacon's Dogs,...8.36 Melani Trio,...8.48 Robert Hilliard,...9.02 Ray L. Royce,...9.30 Quaker City Four,...9.45 Flood Bros. & Co.,...10.08 Kinetograph,...10.20
