93 NEW YORK CRITICISM August 27th, 1906 The Hurleys:- Acrobatic number in which the woman does the heavy work. Rather slow between their tricks, but alright for an early place. 8 Min, full stage. DeFAYE SISTERS "The Musical Maids" Two young ladies, pleasing personality, nicely costumed. Their work consists of selections on the banjo, mandolin, violin, cornet and trombone, with a wee bit of singing and dancing. They are fairly good musicians, the singing and dancing will not do any damage. The act is thoroughly alright for an early place. 15 min. Full stage. GATES & NELSON Two men club jugglers on revolving globes. Well known. Went fairly well in this place and always an acceptable three show offering. 10 min. Full stage. DURAND TRIO Greatly improved since last here. Applause hit of the show up to this time and fully capable of holding a better position. 12 min. in one, three shows. HARRY BOTTER & CO In their one-act comedy "A Matrimonial Blizzard" As a three show sketch this act gets by alright. It contains several laughs with some fairly good business. 19 min. Full stage. JOHN E. HAZZARD Any adverse criticism on this man was probably due to the manner in which he was placed. He is a wonder in dialect work and was easily the laughing hit of the show up to this time. 15 min., in one, two shows. MURRAY & LANE In their well known singing sketch. A little tame on the start off but finally won out. Compelled to take several curtain calls. 18 min. Full stage. SIDMAN & SHANNON "The German Astrologers" Carry their own drop representing the tops of houses, with moon effect. The act on the start went a little better than on the day of rehearsal. Sidman works on the Louis Mann style. The material is good and received some scattered laughs. Their strongest part being "please give us your kind applause" song and with the aid of the stereopticon, showing the pictures of Warfield, Bryan[,] McKinley and Roosevelt, which naturally gave them a very strong finish. The act is novel, but they have the wrong idea regarding salary, I think $175 is about right. 19 min. Drop in one, two shows. MR. & MRS. GENE HUGHES In the comedy "Suppressing the Press" This is a case where a good comedy is ruined by a bad actor. The sketch is very good, containing some excellent business with many strong laughs. Closed very strong. 24 min. Full stage. KINETOGRAPH Coronation of King Alphonse Good The Royal Bull Fight Very interesting Royal Review. Good.
