99 CRITICISM OF NEW YORK SHOW--SEPTEMBER 3RD, 1906 MR. & MRS. W. O'BRIEN: Singing and Talking Comedy. Have some fairly good material. Will improve by work. Pleased the holiday crowd immensely. Alright for the circuit for an early place. 16 min. in one-3 shows THE GAGNOUX: Juggling and feats of Equilibrium. Greatly improved. All of their work very interesting and appreciated throughout with big applause on the finish. Excellent three-show act. 16 min.-full stage LILY SELVILLE: This woman did not go as good as on her former appearance. Sang "Waiting at the Church" which we have barred months ago. Will change her selections around and am quite sure she will hold her own in this place. 12 min. in one- 3 shows CHERRY & BATES: Comedy Cyclists. One working straight, the other eccentric. Straight man received a big lot of applause, while the comedy end of it was fairly well taken care of. Closed rather tame, but the act is alright for the three-show section. 20 min.-full stage THE BAILEYS: Opened rather tame. Got crowd on their funny dialogue and finished very strong. Easily the applause hit of the show up to this time. 12 min. in one- 3 shows BETTINA BRUCE & CO: 2 men and a woman The company is really man and woman. The other man is merely used in the illusion. They call the sketch "The Ashes of Adam." Opened very tame. The idea seemed inconsistent with an objectionable subject to work on--that of a drunken character. On Monday the comedy just about got by with the holiday crowd, but it has improved since with the special light effects, etc. The comedy rather rough and received quite a number of scattered laughs with fairly good applause on the finish. Act is thoroughly alright for an early place, but I think a little overpaid. 18 min.-full stage- 2 shows PONGO & LEO: Comedy pole act. One working straight, the other as a Chinaman. It is so long since we had an act of this nature that it is sort of a novelty. Both men are excellent acrobats and equilibrists. Secured quite a number of laughs after they got to the pole work. 12 min. in one- 2 shows THE GEMS: First American appearance. 3 men and 2 women. In their condensed comedietta. It is a very good musical number. The women look pretty, are nicely costumed; while the men work in full dress, and are all clever performers. Act opens with a chorus and then into several musical numbers and closed with a finale. One thing in their favor is that they work quickly, holding the stage only twelve minutes, and is one continual
