114 SEPT. 17, 1906. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. THE RICHARDS, Acrobats:- 10 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 1:17-5:15-6:46. Two men, one working straight and the other clown. Use a double bar on a single support about twelve feet above the stage. The athletic work is fairly good and the same may be said of the comedy. Small applause at the finish. Not a strong opener. WARD BROTHERS, Comedians and Dancers:-10 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 1:27--5:25-- 6:56. Two boys in college make-up. Do song and dance specialty. The singing is weak, but the dancing is good. Their double dancing seems to be a little too much of an effort toward novelty, but their single work is very commendable, and got a good hand for some new and difficult steps. The close was exceptionally good for a dancing act. TOSSING AUSTINS, Juggling and Dancing:-15 min. F.S. 3 shows.- On at 1:37--5:35--7:07. Man as tramp and woman as soubrette. The act opens with some dancing by the woman. Ordinary feats of jugglerly by the man with some passable comedy accompanying. Received some applause. Man tosses hats, balls, Indian clubs, cigar boxes, etc. and creates a little merriment by drawing colored handkerchiefs from various parts of his apparel. Woman makes three changes of costume, all of which are quite effective. Dancing is sprightly, but nothing at all that calls for especial comment. Act holds down this place acceptably. NOBLES SISTERS, Vocalistes:- 10 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 1:52--5:50--7:22. Two rather pretty girls whose work is acceptable in the three-a-day section. Dress becomingly and will improve. LABAKANS, Acrobatic, with dog:- 10 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 2:07--7:37. Two men in German comedy make-up. This is a fair comedy acrobatic act, but rather a disappointment as an importation. The tricks are not by any means new, but they are good enough to hold the interest if not on too late. Additional pleasure is found in the act through the introduction of the trick dog which is surely well trained and got the children laughing. The act is O.K. for this spot on the bill, but not later. MONROE & WESLEY, Irish Comedy and Song:- 15 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 2:17--7:47.-Two men, one working sport and the Irish comedian. Act includes some very good dancing and some comedy work over a table with a shell game which is played after the manner of an old Weber & Fields prank. The comedy work and dancing received some applause. The close was fair. This act is not strong enough to hold any important place on the bill, and had to go up after Monday's showing. FOURTEEN BLACK HUSSARS, Colored Musical act:- 16 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 2:32--8:08. Ten colored men and four women, all trained musicians in brass. There is a lot of dash and go in this act, and it seemed to take very well. The band features were varied by one or two singing numbers, only fairly good, and also French horn, double quartette, drill and drum novelty, which made a very noisy, but amusing finish. The act is very nicely dressed, and might make a good closer anywhere but in Philadelphia where the coon is no HOW THE OFFICE BOY SAW THE BALL GAME:-One of the best comedy films we have had for some time. Altogether the KINETOGRAPH feature is O.K. and holds the audiences to the end. CHRIS SMITH and the JOHNSONS, Colored Comedians:-18 min. F.S. close in 1. 3 shows. On at 5:00--6:30. Two men and a woman. These people work hard to amuse, but do not succeed above the average of the 3-a-day section. In fact, they just about hold their own. The selections of songs is good, and the singing is fair. The comedy brought some scattered laughs, mainly from the gallery. Close was fair. GENERAL REMARKS;- Bill as revised runs smoothly and well, although there is too much blackface, coon and dancing, and too many acts,--seven in all,-that do 12 minutes or less, making time very short. With present shift and the audition of BAKER TROUPE will hold the crowd O.K. for balance of week.
