71. UNION SQUARE CRITICISM---WEEK OF APRIL 1st, 1907. OVERTURE---"The Village Orchestra." This selection made a great big hit, and got a big encore as good as a $75.00 act. I am making a feature of these Comedy overtures. DeVOIE TRIO---Three men in Acrobatic and ring act. Very good opening act. Got good applause. Neat work and neatly dressed. This is the best three show act I have had, and is worthy of a better spot. 11 minutes, full stage. ROWLAND--Colored man in comedy juggling act.Makes up as white tramp and it is impossible for the audience to know he is a colored man. Some of his tricks are good, while others are old. However at the price I am paying him, it is a good three show act. 15 minutes, full stage. Short close in one. SIEFRIED---Good looking young "monopede" who made a big hit, and is a close second to Tom Heffron. A legitimate act without a crutch or any sympathy about it. Some of his tricks are great, and his big jump is a marvel. Another of my Thursday morning trials. 12 minutes full stage. ADALINE FRANCIS---Young woman with rather a disagreeable voice. Her imitations were a "joke." No personality. 10 minutes in one. Three shows. THE BAILEYS---Two colored people. Man and woman. Good act, and went very well. Netly dressed and the man is a good singer, but why they are not in the three show section I can't imagine. 14 minutes in one. AINSLEY SCOTT--Man who claims he is the oldest actor in Harness in America. Appears in full dress suit, changes to tramp and recites the face on the bar room floor. Quick change to Virginius recitation introducing young woman in Costume as Virginia. He is a splendid looking man with a magnificent voice, and looks more like fifty than eighty-five years old. Both his readings got good applause, and the act is well worth the money. 17 minutes, full stage. Could close in one. SWOR BROS.---Black-face Comedians. A good line of talk that went very well, and a great deal of it new. Dancing very good, and the Comedy end went big. Good act. 20 minutes in one. RAFAYETTE'S DOGS---Great act, and made a big hit. These dogs are the "limit" for intelligence, and elicited big applause. Good act to draw the youngsters. Splendid finish. The man who works the act is a good showman. Some of the tricks are absolutely new. 11 minutes, full stage. GEORGE FULLER GOLDEN---Another big hit, and held the audience to the finish. This man always seems to make good, although very little new stuff. Big advance applause and at finish. 20 minutes in one. OKABE'S JAPS--Good closing act. Good paraphernalia and tricks neat and quickly done. Big applause. Without doubt the best Jap act I have had. 13 minutes, full stage. KINETOGRAPH---Without a Travelling Menagerie. Interesting and good film. The Yawner. Fairly funny pictures. NOTE---Show looks bad on paper but outside of the Spook "lemon" made good, and audience seemed more than pleased by the amount of applause. Lindsay Morison.
