Boston Show, Week of March 22nd, 1909. Carl D. Lothrop. (Monday, March 22nd--Afternoon Show) Overture. 1.37, 11 minutes. "Hy" Greenway. On at 1.48, 14 minutes in two. Can close in one, or can do entire act in one if necessary. A juggling comedian who should not be overlooked. Give him a spot in any show and he will score. He does his tricks very neatly and is a capital comedian. I would not be afraid to use him at 3 and 9 in this house and feel that the better the spot the better he would go. Irene La Tour and "Zaza". On at 2.02, 11 minutes in one. A nice appearing girl who is a rattling good contortionist, and a very, very clever trained dog. The act is in the best form I have ever seen it and should score in any house. Another act that could go down the bill. Kalmar and Brown. On at 2.13, 10 minutes full stage, 3 minutes close in one, 13 minutes in all. An exceptionally good dancing act, but to my mind not up to the Rock and Fulton standard as yet, Mr. Lovenberg and others to the contrary, notwithstanding, for Miss Brown is miles behind Miss Fulton in cleverness and personality. However, it is deserving of a better place in this bill and I think after to-day we will be able to give it to them. Fiddler and Shelton. On at 2.26, 19 minutes in one. These two colored boys made good with emphasis here to-day. They are sure fire for any show. "The Patriot." On at 2.45, 24 minutes full stage, special set. Vaudeville's first grand opera and I hope the last, for it was a most pronounced frost this afternoon and did not go much better to-night. I consider the cost distinctly inferior to the original. In fact, the opera was in better shape when I saw it its first week in Lawrence last season. While Miss Le Brun is no beauty she can sing rings around Helena Frederick. The only improvement I can see is Mr. Schuster in place of Mr. Stevens. If it wasn't for Schuster I don't know what would happen to the act. Mr. Ripple who attempts the tenor role is well named and the sooner a man with a voice is put in his part the better. One of the biggest disappointments of the season. This statement is made after watching the way the act went both this afternoon and this evening. Mullen and Corelli. On at 3.09, 11 minutes in one. One of the best comedy acts in one in vaudeville to-day. A great big hit. Please don't let this team get away from us. The Exposition Four. On at 3.20, 16 minutes full stage, 3 minutes close in one, 19 minutes in all. A standard act. They never return with the same repertoire of music. Scored their customary hit. Burgos and Clara. On at 5.05, 9 minutes full stage. A novelty act that is good enough to open almost any show and should make an acceptable closer in the small towns. They do some clever lariat work and some novel wire stunts. The act needs better dressing. Sheppard and Ward. On at 5.14, 13 minutes in one. Man and woman in talk and parodies. O. K. for the 3 show section and at No. 2 in the smaller cities. Comment. If we had a good comedy sketch in place of "The Patriot" this show would be much stronger. Every act in it can be marked a hit, excepting the opera, but the peculiar make-up of the show seems to make it almost impossible to make a really satisfactory re-arrangement and get all the meat out of it.
