C. E. BARNS. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. APRIL 19-09. MARSEILLES. "A Puzzle in Black and White." This man is truly remarkable in the contortion line. He does many of the stunts seen here before, but others that are new, and each of them gets a good hand. Makes a weird appearance against a black plush drop. Closed well. CONROY, LEMAIRE & CO. "A King for a Night." 24 min. open in one. The plot concerns the scheme of a villain to introduce a Baltimore coon as the king of a mythical country to a Parisian woman with the object of doping her wine and robbing her. The play is fairly well written, and whereas he did not make a very strong impression, nevertheless, it got by with its comedy in this spot. A good hand at the close. Not quite as strong as we had expected. MABELLE ADAMS. 15 min. in one. Makes a very pretty appearance, and plays the violin exceedingly well. Good hand after each selection. BARNES & CRAWFORD. 18 min. F.S., close in one. This is a mixture of vocal work and nonsense that held the interest of the audience throughout, in parts getting considerable applause. Barnes' humor reminds one somewhat of Griff and many of the stunts in a burlesque magic line are very laughable. Act went well. CLARA BELLE JEROME. 22 min. F.S. Sohlke has improved this act immensely since I first saw it. It runs smoothly and there is a good deal of originality in the spectacular setting and costuming. The vocal work and dancing are above the average. The act particularly pleased the children. The finish made a hit and brought a big hand. CHARLES KENNA. 17 min. in one. Kenna delivered his well known street fakir monologue. Although some parts are rough, nevertheless the humor is good and the jokes and hits are new. Held the interest of the audience throughout and went off to a strong hand. VALERIE BERGERE & CO. 23 min. "The Morning After." Advance applause. This is a well written act and very interesting. Miss Bergere makes a good impression from the first and leads up to a very strong climax. Miss Bergere is well supported. The act is finished and absorbing and made a decided hit. The close was strong. Will go well with out evening audiences. RAYMOND & CAVERLY. 15 min. in one. The well known Dutch comedians. Gave a lot of new material and some that was old. Laughter and applause throughout and a good closing hand. FOUR HARVEYS. 10 min. F.S. A very beautiful and skilful act. The costuming of the girls is very stunning and their work gets big applause. A very showy act that makes an acceptable closer. KINETOGRAPH. "The Curtain Pole." A good comedy film to send them out laughing. GENERAL REMARKS. This show plays off smoothly. The Conroy, LeMaire act did not come quite up to our expectations, but the others made good in their individual spots. Valerie Bergere certainly made a hit.
