Boston Show, Week of July 12th, 1909. R. G. Larsen (Monday, July 12th--Afternoon Show.) Overture. 1.45, 13 minutes. Gillette's Dogs. On at 1.58, 11 minutes full stage. The act, put on for the first time this afternoon, was rather an ambitious effort. Gillette has a stage setting of a sea shore resort, with a beach drop and wave effect. A boat goes by, also an excursion steamer, and there is a balloon ascension. The dogs do not do anything strikingly new. In fact a monk furnishes most of the comedy. This afternoon some of the dogs seemed strange and did not work well. Will go better toward the end of the week, and it is hardly fair to judge it by this afternoon's performance. Later. The act worked up in great shape to-night, getting big applause and laughs. Gives promise of a splendid animal act. Van Brothers. On at 2.09, 16 minutes in one. They held down this spot very well this afternoon. Wilson. On at 2.55, 11 minutes full stage. This bicyclist stirred things up a bit, and his spinning on the bicycle caught the audience for fair. It was very much better than the run of bicycle acts. Henry D. Gardner & Minnie Allen. On at 2.36, 14 minutes in two, 5 minutes in one, 19 minutes in all. Gardner is a local man, but that did not help him any to-day, as he got no reception, but with Minnie Allen, his partner, worked up remarkably well, notwithstanding the fact that each of them cut out racy songs which they sang in New York. Miss Allen has a splendid personality and so has Gardner. Their act to-day was bright and snappy. James Horne, Kathryn Purnell & Co., in "The Way to Win A Woman." On at 2.55, 23 minutes full stage. Horne appeared in this sketch last season with another partner, and although it has been cut down about 7 minutes, it still drags a little at the start. When it once gets under way, however, it holds the interest and there is considerable very good comedy. It certainly had a very good finish this afternoon. Charlie Case. On at 3.18, 21 minutes in one. Case is a favorite here and got a warm reception when he appeared. He has much the same stuff, opening with his "Merino Dress" song. I don't know that he ever went better in this house. Romany Opera Company. On at 3.56, 27 minutes full stage, special set. This company has evidently established itself in Boston and is without question a big feature here this afternoon. The stage setting, a street scene in Calabria, was new, but most of the singers were with the company before, and with one or two exceptions, sang the same selections. Everything they did went big, and their closing, although not worked up as strongly as they expect to do it to-night, got practically as many curtains as their former rollicking "Ciri-biri-bi." Kinetograph. On at 4.22. "A Series of Aeroplane Pictures."--that is really worth while. "Jones' Private Theatricals."--Fairly good comic. Cuts--Van Brothers--"Sheath Gown" joke. Comment. A good all round show with a splendid feature in the Romany Opera Company.
