C. E. BARNS. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. SEPT. 27-09. DEXTER FERRY. 10 min. F.S. One of the most novel contortion acts we have ever played. The stage setting, representing "The Florida Everglades," is very picturesque, but the contortion work simply lays over everything we have had in a long time. Kept the audience interested throughout. Introduces considerable humor. The trapeze work at the finish was loudly applauded. Makes an excellent opener. RYAN AND WHITE. 9 min. in one. These two boys are among the best of the wooden-shoe dancers. Work very hard to win applause and get it liberally. Had the audience right with them up to a very good finish. Could stand a strong spot on any bill. GORDON-PICKENS & CO. "What Would You Do?" 14 min. F.S. This is a very rapid-moving sketch which certainly makes up in ginger what it lacks in consistency. The audience liked it and gave it liberal applause. Rightly placed on the bill, as it could not hold a stronger spot, nevertheless made thoroughly good here, and closed strong. OSCAR LORAINE. 17 min. in two. This chap is a crackerjack violinist. Although his impersonations run a little too much toward caricatures, nevertheless, each one of his impersonations of Sarasarte, Joachim and others, won big applause. Closed with five curtain-calls. Really a true artist with the violin, and his act is a distincy novelty. EDMUND STANLEY & CO. "Love's Garden." 18 min. F.S. A high-class vocal act that is admirably costumed and staged. The soprano and contralto are excellent, Mr. Stanley's voice leaving something to be desired. The act held the spot, nevertheless, and received good applause for the solos and the finishing trio. JAMES CULLEN. 19 min. in one. some mighty good new songs offered in his own individual way. The readings from his original joke-book brought constant laughter. Held the spot very well. "MODELS OF THE JARDIN DE PARIS." 30 min. F.S. Opens with interior of studio. Some eccentric Irish clogging and then a curtain rises and discloses five pretty girls who come out on the stage and do some fancy dancing, followed by a toe dancer of merit. The comedy then takes up a quarter-hour, getting a good many laughs. The close is with the entire company in a rapid-talking song, receiving good applause. This act has merit and will improve. NELLA BERGEN. 14 min. in one. Advance applause. Makes a very stunning picture in a gown of silver spangles. Sings popular songs very pleasingly. Two changes of costume follow; the first, that of a gypsy boy; the second, a selection from Sousa's "Bride Elect." Strong applause after each number and a good finish. Will draw money to the house this week. SIMON & GARDNER. "The New Coachman." 34 min. F.S. Same old act and just as big a scream as ever all the way through. Closed very strong. KINETOGRAPH. "LAnd of the Midnight Sun." A very beautiful and timely series. "The Burglar Hypnotist." A very amusing French comedy film. GENERAL REMARKS. This is essentially a musical comedy show and pleases everybody. The absence of "sight" act is not missed and I think that the bill will give general satisfaction.
