REPORT ON PROVIDENCE SHOW, WEEK OF OCTOBER 11th, 1909. Were it not for Van Biene and Mignonette Kokin, this would be a very good show - no sensational hits, but of uniform strength. Van Biene is not bad, but is a disappointment considering him from the headliner standpoint and is not nearly worth the salary in Providence, even as salaries go. The bill dragged at his spot, also in the Mignonette Kokin spot. THE PELOTS Good little comedy juggling act that is well-known. The feature of the act is the comedy personality of the man. Did not seem to go as well this afternoon, maybe because the audience is too familiar with the act and it was dragged out too much. 20 Min. F.S. Close in One 5 Min. Calletti's Monkeys Usually a very good act, but the monkeys did not work as well as usual today. Got plenty of laughs, however. 15 Min. F.S. Mignonette Kokin Was considerably disappointed in this act today. Miss Kokin is a really clever young woman, but her material today was very, very bad, and she dressed more slopily than ever. Her "Kiss Me" dance was so bad that it got undesired laughs. Are having her cut it considerably for tonight and she will substitute another song in its place after tonight. It is a pity that somebody doesn't take her in hand. Even the clever dance that she does at the finish of her act did not get her a hand on her exit. 11 Min. in One. Kalmer & Brown In Characteristic Dances. Same dances they gave us before, only costumed and staged more elaborately, their special stage setting being very attractive and giving the act tone. A very good act that got hearty applause. 22 Min F.S. About 3 Min. in One. VAn Biene & Co. In "The Master Musician". Rather handicapped this afternoon by the illness of a member of his company who did not appear, and today's audience did not seem to care for Van Biene's playing as much as they have on previous occasions. Think it will go better with tonight's audience. I can understand why the sketch did not go in New York, for it is too quiet, but I think for the other cities it is all right. 21 Min. F.S. Warren & Blanchard Well-known blackface comedians who picked up the show, which had dropped at Van Biene, in great shape. Got the audience laughing from the start and finished big. 21 Min. in One. Swat Milligan Baseball comedy that went exceedingly well. Even to the people who do not go to ball games and did not understand the technicalities the fun was infectious and the laughs were almost continuous. Viena Bolton is the star of the act. Special Set, showing exterior of a baseball field, in Two. 19 Min. Lola Merrill & Frank Otto The applause hit of the bill. A very neat and smart talking and singing comedy, "After the Shower". Some of the dialogue and one of the songs (This Is No Place For A Minister's Son) is a little racy, but they handle it so cleverly and in such a clean-cut manner that no one in the audience seemed to object. Excellently costumed. Finished big with a conversational song. 22 Min. in One. Flying Martins Trapezists. The speed with which these boys work got the audience excited and the six minutes of their act were filled with applause. An excellent act. Work in white costumes with black background, which is very effective. 6 Min. F.S. Motion Pictures O.K.
