Report on PROVIDENCE SHOW, Week of Jan. 5th, 1914. Chas. Lovenberg, Manager. The show is a pretty good one, though in no sense is it great; it falls down in spots and starts off rather weakly. HERMINE HESSLER Equilibrist act, after the style of Harry DeCoe - a very long way after. Manages to fill in 6 Min. F.S. HOWARD & LAWRENCE I am afraid vaudeville has passed by Bert Howard. He seems to have lost his personality entirely and his trick piano playing is not up to what many more modern ones are doing. Miss Lawrence, with a little bit better material, could do something, but the act as a whole doesn't do very well. 10 Min. in One and a Half. HARRY LESTER Lester has quite a little good material but is inclined to impose himself upon the audience a little more than they want. For about 14 Min. he did pretty well; when he piled 4 Min. on, he spoiled it. This afternoon his act ran 18 Min.; will cut it down to 14 for the night, in One. HOMER MILES & CO. In "On the Edge of Things." In my opinion this is a better sketch than his former vehicle, "On a Side Street." Went very well indeed. 18 Min. F. S. THE GIRL FROM MILWAUKEE In her first two selections, she just got by; on the third, "My Hero," she belched out pretty strong and drowned out the orchestra, and a certain class of people thought she was a great singer. There are 50 girls in Providence, who would be tickled to death to go on, for less than half of her salary, and sing all around here and could go into New York and make as big a hit. She may make some people believe she can sing, but not me. 10 Min. in One. THE UESSEMS There is no question but these people do the most wonderful feats that were ever offered in vaudeville in their line, and they made a very big hit, but they would make a much bigger hit if they would stop stalling as much as they do and cut out a few of the dances and inconsequential things that are introduced and keep right down to their important feats. Although I plugged hard for this act at first because of what I had heard of it, I am inclined to believe that they get about $300 too much. 26 Min. F. S. DIAMOND & BRENNAN This is the sort of an act that vaudeville patrons want as was attested by the fact that they were the unqualified hit of the show. 18 Min. in One. RAFAYETTES DOGS Exceptionally good dog act. 13 Min. F. S. MOTION PICTURES O. K. HOWARD & LAWRENCE Today, Howard & Lawrence, at my suggestion, have made a change in the act. Howard is doing the character of the rube, which he did some 10 years ago. It gives a little more character to the skit, and I think goes some better for it. In houses where they are not too particular, for an early spot I think the act would be all right in its present condition, but not at the price that is being paid for it. I am going to have a talk with him today and advise him to get some different material. As a rube character actor and piano player, there is no reason why he shouldn't get material over all right and Miss Lawrence also has ability and it is too bad that they are wasting it with a poor vehicle.
