B. F. KEITH'S HIPPODROME Week of March 16, 1914 Cleveland, Ohio DUPREE & DUPREE - - Man and woman. Special velour drop in 3. 10 minutes. Bicycle riders. It's a good act. They have a number of new stunts. Later on the bill we have Will Rogers riding the bicycle and also the two monkeys. However, this team has the edge on the other two as far as bicycle riding is concerned. (Columbus) SIDNEY & TOWNLEY - - Man and woman. Palace in 1. 12 minutes. This is just a fair singing and dancing act. They do a little tango. Although they got by, they did not have much room to spare. It was a close shave. (Columbus) ALEXANDER IRVINE & CO- - C. D. F. in 4. 17 minutes. Mr. Irvine's sketch is entitled "The Rector of St. Judes" It is the staging of some of his experiences as Assistant Rector of the church of the Ascension in New York City. The sketch is a bit socialistic in its tendencies, but, withal is forceful and convincing. Closed to big applause. (Open) FREDERICK V. BOWERS & CO - - Open Special in one, close Palace in 1. 17 minutes, 3 men, 1 woman. A little of everything in the singing and dancing line. The act is full of ginger and travels at high speed from start to finish. The two colored dancers made a hit. (Columbus) LEE BARTH - - Street in 1. 12 minutes. Dialect stories. Seemed to hold down this spot in good shape. Was not a riot, but pleased. (Chicago) A. AVITABLE'S ENGLISH GRAND OPERA CO - - Special in 4. 27 minutes. 5 principals, 3 women, 2 men, chorus of 12. It would be hardly fair for me to criticise this act because of the fact that the act is not getting a fair show here in Cleveland. Outside of New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, there is not a single city in the United States that has had as much grand opera since last September. We have had all kinds of operas presented by all kinds of companies and at all sorts of prices. The people are tired and sick of it, and yesterday when the act had been on five minutes you could not get into the Gentlemen's smoking room, and the foyer was full of promenaders. It is seldom that this happens in this house. I don't know of another instance this season where the rest rooms have been so well patronized during the show. In some towns where they are hungry for grand opera they may make a hit. Therefore, I do not think it is fair to judge the act by what Cleveland people think of it. (Open) WILL ROGERS* - - Palace in 1. 12 minutes. Rogers came out and told the audience that he did not think it was a good show. He said that following him were the Trained Baboons and therefore his act and the next act conflicted. He suggested that the show was badly arranged, said that the monkeys had stolen some of his bicycle work, and the next thing he knew they would be doing his rope tricks. Rogers made his usual big hit. He is probably the best thing on the bill from the standpoint of the audience. He has a lot of newbright patter and his act went over immensely. (Grand Rapids) CONSUL & BETTY - - Full stage. 10 minutes. The billing says they are "Two Chimpanzees". If Consul isn't a gorilla my education has been neglected. He is about the size of Irving Jones. He is nearly as big as his trainer, wears a dress suit like a clubman, accomplishes all of his tricks without coaxing or punishment, and in combination with Betty I think is the best monkey act we have ever had. Made a pronounced hit. (New York) Pathe's Weekly.
