WEEK of OCT. 23, '16. BOSTON SHOW REPORT (R. G. Larsen.) HOOPER and MARBURY 11 minutes f.s. Short close in one. Special cyclorama and curtains. A lively singing and dancing act, beautifully dressed. Went very well indeed in this position. REGAL and BENDER 7 minutes in one. Street drop. Acrobatic talking act that is out of the beaten path. Their comedy is excellent, and the tricks good. Could go further down on a bill. MAUD ROCHEZ' "A NIGHT IN A MONKEY MUSIC HALL" 12 minutes f.s. Special set. Comedy monkey act. Got many laughs and closed to a good hand. SANTLEY and NORTON 17 minutes in one. Olio Drop. This is the only "repeat" act on the bill. They put over a decided hit with some new songs and a couple of their old numbers. THREE STEINDEL BROTHERS 19 minutes in one. Rotunda drop. High-class musical act, with piano, cello and violin. These men have the right idea for vaudeville. Open with classical selections, each doing a solo in turn, and wind up with some great "rag" playing with variations. The audience was loath to let them go. In fact, a solid hit. EDWIN ARDEN and CO in "CLOSE QUARTERS" 17 minutes f.s. Dark interior. Dramatic sketch with touches of comedy and a surprise finish. Splendidly played, and went over in good shape. CECIL CUNNINGHAM 20 minutes in one. Plush drapery. Miss Cunningham touched the high-water mark of the show, as far as "class" was concerned. Sang four original songs by Jean C. Havez, all good, and registered one of the biggest applause hits of the show. Introduces considerable comedy, while her personality appeals to an audience. AVON COMEDY FOUR 25 minutes. Open in three. Special set. Close in one. Plain chamber flat and street drop. Doing their new act, "A Hungarian Rhapsodie," Opens in the kitchen of a Hungarian cafe with a Yiddisher chef, a Hungarian proprietor, and two waiters. Go to a doctor's office in one, and close in the street with straight singing. The act was one of the hits of the show at both performances Monday. The comedy got over big, and the singing was up to their usual high standard. Better than the old act. LA ARGENTINA 11 minutes f.s. Special cyclorama. This woman is clever, and her dancing is entirely different from anything we have had here. Although she closed a very fast show, the audience remained in to see her, and she went about as well as any closing act we have had in some time. La Argentina does not talk English very well and as her music is all marked in Spanish, she had a little difficulty with the orchestra at the opening performance. It might be a good idea for her agent to see that her music cues are translated into English, if she is desirous of giving a good performance on Monday afternoons. CUTS Santley and Norton - "Woman and her husband was in New Bedford" gag. Expression "bushwah-wah-wah" Entire song - "There's a little bit of bad in every good little girl." Regal and Bender - "Fly in the bathroom" joke. Avon Comedy Four - "I have tender corns" gag at opening. COMMENT An exceptionally fast show, all new acts but one, full of "Pep", and every turn up to the big-time standard.
