STEFNEWS 5 May 46 PROZINES GRF [First Column] Rahway reports Whitehorn out at Planet these two weeks; new editor Paul Payne. A tightening of policy on the letter section is intimated, for one thing. _________________________ MUNDANE MAGS May issue of The Northwest Technocrat reprints War and Progress from 1/2 Scientifictionist, with an acknowledgment note concluding:" Its contributors and subscribers are fans of the science fiction magasines from all across the Continent. These young people are keenly aware of the seriousness of present trends and with their youthful, forward-looking vision they readily grasp their social significance." ________________________ ESFA GRF-HE 21 Apr was held the initial meeting of the Eastern Science-Fiction Association, an outgrowth of the Null-A Men. The meeting, in Newark, drew fourteen. Richard S Shaver has invited Joe Kennedy to spend summer with him; claims he doesn't believe in the occult;and wants to subscribe to fanzines, for which he has placed funds in Kennedy's hands. _________________________ LASFS FJA 2 May the LosAngeles Science-Fantasy Society clubroom was crowded with the Ashleys, Burbee, Daugherty, Evans, 4e&T, Goldstone, Hart, Hodgkins, Hunter, Hevelin, the Moore-Kuttners, Larey, Liebscher, Shroyer, OKSmith, VanVogt, Bryce Walton, Willmorth, Grozetti,and 8 or 9 others. Rusty reported on histrip east; Liebacher gave book news; Tigrina movies; 4e stefnews; Daugherty Pacificonews. At Slan Shack ProTem afterwards, immortality and interplanetary morality were discussed till 0030. Van Vogt has five novelets and a serial scheduled for the series which began with A Son Is Born. [Second Column] Serjeant Hevelin is back in California. Longest stop on his trip was in Philadelphia; Hagerstown was a side trip[ from there .Enroute back, Rusty visited Tanner and Tarr and conferred with them for an evening. Having learned in Bloomington on the way out that Tucker has taken a job in Peoria,he passed to the southward on his return trip. 1 May the Marine went to Frisco to see Fortier, not knowing the latter had moved. He plans a more satisfactory tour of the fanation in October after discharge. _________________________ PLANS EnsignDavis was to depart about 3 May on a furlough, itinerary of which he wishes not announced. You have been warned. Writes Don Thomopson: "I may be walking in on one of Burton Crane's jam sessions in Tokyo one of these days; I've applied for transfer to Tokyo in my present rating as draftsman, SP-7, and apparently there is an excellent chance that I'll be accepted". HYPERBOREANS HE Our remark some time ago that Detroit had the makings of a local, was a serious understatement, as the following minutes reveal: "The 18th Hyperborean meeting was held 28 April at Erik Thomassen's home in Ann Arbor. Members Miller, Kos, McManus, Thomassen, and Elenore were present. The business meeting began at 1415. Last meeting's minutes were read, dues collected, and the treasurer reported $20.50 to be the balance on hand in the treasury. After a brief discussion, the postcard poll proposal made at the previous meeting was unanimously killed. Slanry, presiding over the meeting, then nominated Mr. Kos as director, as he thot that one person should not hold all the offices; and Mr. Kos was an older member and had experience in conducting meetings.
