DYKTAWO!--REMEMBER? by Weaver Wright I don’t know who Jacques DeForest Erman may be, but in the April Super Science this jerque has turned out an atrocity called DHACTWHU!—REMEMBER? I understand the Ackerman Fantasy Agency made the sale of this poor man’s Kuttner imitation of a Merrittale so I contacted Acky to get the lowdown on the yarn. “Well,” Acky explained to me, “’DHACTWHU!—REMEMBER?’, as it was originally titled, was written by Doc Lowndes around the cover that appeared on the Feb 43 Astonishing Stories. His version was not used; ‘Earth, Farewell!’, by Jas. MacCreigh, was. “Doc sent the yarn around to the fantasy mags of the day, but it was universally rejected. He got sick and tired of seeing it around, sent it to me several years later to do anything I could with it---sell it to England, salvage a part of it for a coke, palm it off on a fanmag….. anything, just so’s he wouldn’t have to see it around any more. “Well, I turned it over to Jacques. I remember he spent all one Armistice Day about 3 years ago rewriting it. He didn’t touch the plot, he just touched up the language in which it was told. He sat there turning over Doc’s pages—26 of ‘em, in elite type--and battling away nonstop till about midnite. “The new collaboration was rejected by 12 markets. No one was more surprised than Jacques when, out of stacks of mss sent by me two Editor Jakobsson, Dhactwhu! Was bought. “But went Jacques read the story in print, he was really bewildered. In the original version, the 3 lone men of paragraph 5 were lost in the South American jungle. Jacques changed that in the final draft two ‘inimicable jungle’. In Super Science it was simply ‘jungle’. “Jacques tells me that he read his own collaboration with wide-mouth to wonder. What happened to it? Had it really been told in as staccato a style as that? Was the language really so comictrippish, so abc simple? What had become of the smart similes, the masterful metaphors, quotable quotes? He checked against the manuscript. He found: Materialized was changed to made real. Satellite became moon. Vocable: word. Fraught (Lowndes had “rigged up”) became strewn. Kissed: touched. Lambent: sourceless. Moribund: dying. Avian life: birds. Maize-colored arboreals: yellow trees. Ambulatory: moving. Pedestrian paths: footpaths. The android: he. Neologisms: unfamiliar terms. Flora and fauna: plants and animals--! Jacques wrote: Not a poodle or something pettable. They wrote:
