February, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 30. made Thompson and I wonder whether they might also be used in some used in some way for stealing the thoughts of fans or something. Baltadonis[?] let us look around his den. it was cluttered with mail, hectographs, and fan-mags. There are a couple of origianls around the room and also some items Jack made out of Clay. I might mention here that a clay ash tray caricaturing Wollheim elicited much praise and desire for possession on the part of seceral fans. Several fans had arrived the night before, and attended the PSFS meeting. They had slept together in the car. We met them and after shattering for a while, about noon Thompson and I went to look for some place to eat, accompanied by Alex Osheroff and Robert Strouse. We got back about one and by then more had arrived. Art Widner's car, "The Skylark of Woo Woo," was parked outside and we went in and met Art. Abe Oshinsky and Dick Crain also had come by now. Also Sam Moskowitz. Someone found some drawings of nude women done by Balty and they were eagerly looked at, over-eagerly by Crain, it seemed to me. We all wondered whether Balty had a model. (Ah, scandel!) Finally we all left for the hall, in the cars. That is the hall where the conference was to be held. Madle also had arrived, and went with us. Boy, what a dump that place was! The PSFS got robbed out of $5.00. A German Bund also met in the same place, and there were some rifles locked up in their meeting room. Some old drunk hanging around there tried to tell us of the past history of the hall, but I ignored him. A couple of fan-mags were passed out, including FANTASY FICTION FIELD, PSFS NEWS, FANTASY NEWS, and FANTASCIENCE DIGEST. Plenty of other fans had arrived. I liked Jack Speer. He is very short, and has palin features, but is very interesting to talk to, and his voice has a pleasent tone. Milty Rothman also was continually moving around, snapping pictures and playing an 18 year old piano he found in a corner. Elmer Perdue kept taking pictures during the whole conference and also exhibited some he had taken at the Chicon. Some old magazine were put up for sale, and Rothman came off best here. He got away with the very first issue of AMAZING in good condition for 35[[cent symbol]]! Bob Studley got the three issues of Skylark for $1.05. Several other fellows also picked up bargins. Gerry de la Ree,Jr., and Roderick Gaetz arrived from Westwood and passed out some advance copies of SUN SPOTS. Julius Unger also arrived later. As I recall there were 33 present, and while not a record crowd there were enough to make it interesting. Except for the official regester, no one but myself attempted to collect the autographs of the fans present, and my list was not complete. I not however that it was signed by myself, Bob Studley, Art Widner,Jr., Elmer Perdue, Bob Thompson, Abe Oshinsky, Alex Osheroff, Robert Strouse, Milton Rothman, Jack Speer, Gerry de la Ree,Jr, Roderick Gaetz, Sam Moskowitz, Harry Walton, Pauline Lincoff, Mrs. Frances Sykora, Pearl Moskowitz, Ray Van Houten, Will Sykora, Alexander M. Phillips, John V. Baltadonis, Robert Madle, and John W. Bell. Although I did not get their signatures, I know the following were present: Stan Bachrach, Julius Unger, Dick Crain, Hyman Tiger, Ben Lesser, A. Linkoff, Scott Feldmen, and several PSFS members, whosenames I do not recall.
