February 1941, SUN SPOTS, Page 36 ious Old Days of S-F" and should be left there. When he was careful, with his colors he could create a most bizarre effect. But there were times when he made me sick at the stomach with his gaudy hues. His machinery was good. However, compare it's with Wesso, Scheeman, or Dold. The result is that you turn away. Even now some fans want him. His work is too sloppy at present to merit my commendation. He's resting on former laurels. My last squawk is the discontinuation of the Science Fiction Series, the little pocket booklets that Science Wonder issued. I recall with much joy the pleasure derived from reading the following: "The Invadind Asterois", by Manly Wade Wellman, "Vally of the Great Ray", by Pansley E. Black and "The Ship From Nowhere" also by same author. And also "The Torch of Ra," "When The Moon Fell", and "The Immortals of Mercury." All were neat little bits of Stf that any collector would be glad to get a hold of. I know I certainly would like to have all of the series again. Some one might say: "But Wonder is publishing them 'today'". To that person I say this: "The Booklets that Wonder are selling now are nothing more than a few copies that they received when the took the mag over from Gernsbach!" THE END A REVIEW OF FAN MAGAZINES (Those sloppy little hunks of dirty papers that just are!) ALCHEMIST:- 42 small sized well mimeod pages, published monthly by Hansen, Martin and Hunt, at 1258 Race St., Denver, Colo. 10c The December number has some good material with good illustrations by d knight, H.Bok, and R. Hunt. Well worth your time and 10c THE COMET :- 30 large sized well mimeod pages, published "monthly" by Tom Wright, at 1140 Bush St., Martinez, Calif. 10c. Last issue, not dated, had a rather poor cover, considering it was done by such a good artist as P. Bronson. Other material held your intrest well. CENTAUR:- 20 hectographed pages, to be published, by Phil Schumann at 2767 N. 41st. Street, Milwaukee, Wis. Be out by Jan. 15th. Send Phil a dime and get a copy. He's sadly in need of the fans support. DETOURS: Haven't seen it lately. FANFARE:- 30 large sized, well hectoed pages, published bi-monthly by The Stranger CLub, eds Singleton and Widner. Address: Box 122, Bryantville, Mass. 10c. It's first anniversary issue had a cover, and one or two interesting articles. Hamling-Singleton fued is amusing. Via Jaloppy is also good, but the best depts are missing. FANTASITE:- 24 large sized well hectoed pages, published bi-monthly by Phil Bronson at 224 W. 6th St, Hastings, Minn. - 10c. First issue has excellent cover, and good interiors by Bronson and Wright. Fan mag review is good Tucker's Chicon article wasn't so hot. The rest of the stuff, however made up for Tucker's tripe. FAN-ATIC: 8 3/4 readable hectoed pages, published bi-monthly by C A. Beling, La Roche Ave. Harrington Park, N.J.- 5c . First issue has a cover that doesn't have anything to do with the interior material, otherwise it's all right. Material includes the first 1,000 words of a story by MW Wellman, and a humorous (?) story by delaGaetz. Next issue to be mimeod, and will have 15 pages. FANTASEER:- 24 small sized nearly readable hectoed pages, published monthly by W. Groveman, 38 Hempstead, N.Y. - 5c. Feb. issue was not as good as previous poorly mimeod issues. Go back to the mimeo.
