February 1941 SUN SPOTS Page 40 ata has some 90 years of normal sunlight, during which the inhabitants age, then enters the nebula, where life processes reverse. The inhabitants lose their memories, and become children again. Because of this they keep complete records of everything of value, so that they can begin anew at the beginning of each "cycle". Shielded from the nebular radiations by their ship and their spacesuits, when the period of darkness begins, The Thubanites, working under great handicaps, repair their vessel, and leave. They have to remain young enough to return to their own planet, earth. Opinion:-- very good. A really original story. ASTOUNDING fans should like it. Rating -- 8. "Cosmic Derelict," Novelette by Neil R. Jones. The deservedly popular "Professor Jameson" returns. He and the other machine Men find some dead beings in a derelict space-shop. They transfer the brains to bodies like their own, and revice them. These Jribpdls overcome their benefactors with a tuned brain-disrupting radiation, and set out to take over the government of their own world, whence they had been driven out of, seven years before. But only the true Zoromes are completely incapacitated by the vibration, Professor Jameson recovers completely, and takes the place of one of the Jribpdls on the spaces-ship. Three of those left behind, after a time, recover somewhat and one of them manages to turn off the ray. The would be tyrants are, of course defeated. Opinion:- good. A treat for Prof. Jameson fans. Rating --7 THRILLING WONDER STORIES, Feb 1941. Rating 6.0; High,- 7; Low 4. "Trouble on Titan" short novel, by Arthur K Barnes. Gerry Carlyle, "The Bring 'em Back Alive Gal", of the London Zoo, runs a race with Kurtt, murderous hireling of Von Zorn, of the Nine Planet Films. Gerry catches the "Dermaphos," which is the object of the race, and heads for home; but Kurtt wrecks her ship, and takes the beast as 'salvage'. After some tough adventures on Titan, where she finds a non-Solarian human race, and a native race, parasites of the humans, Gerry and her crew rebuild their ship, and head for earth. They find Kurtt circling the moon in a powerless ship, as Gerry had predicted, the Dermaphos, shorted by Kurtt on its regular diet of Uranium-bearing vegetable, having eaten the U-235 used to activate the rocket-fuel, Gerry takes her beast, wins the race, and saves her job with the zoo. Opinion:- Good pf its type. Many fans don't like the Carlyle stories, but Your Reviewer does. The plot is good , much of the science being accurate, and the pseudo-science is interesting. Rating -- 7. Other recent magazines: AMAZING, Feb, High --7; Low-4; Rating - 5.3. FF MYSTERIES, Jan, High-8; Low-6; Rating -7.5. COMET, Jan, High (3 stories tie)--8; Low-3; Rating- 6.6. THE END Gerry de la Ree, wishes his many correspondants, who haven't been hereing from him lately, to know that he is going to catch up on his letter writing now that the anniversary issue is out of the way...
