NEWS WHILE IT'S HOT! FANTASY-NEWS the science fiction weekly newspaper P̲R̲I̲C̲E̲: THREE ISSUES TEN CENTS VOLUME 5 NUMBER 17 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1940 WHOLE NUMBER 122 MOSKOWITZ, TAURASI, GIUNTA, TURN PRO !!! F̲O̲R̲M̲ ̲N̲E̲W̲ ̲C̲L̲U̲B̲,̲ ̲"̲T̲H̲E̲ ̲C̲O̲M̲E̲T̲E̲E̲R̲S̲"̲.̲ With the sale, by Sam Moskowltz, of a 12,000 word novelet to COMET, plus a full length novel by John Victor Peterson, both agented by Jimmy Taurasi, as well as the sale of several excellent illustrations by John Giunta to at [least two pro stf mags, these active fans have announced that they have turned pro. No longer busy with fan activities, they have determined to devote all their time to the creation and sale of their {efforts to the pro mags. With a view toward ensuring closer cooperation and contact between themselves and the pro mag editors, they have organized The Cometeers, a sort of mutual admiration society whose lone honorary member is F. Orlin Tremaine, the man who gave them their chance. It is in his honor that the club has been formed. John Pererson's yarn will appear in the second issue of COMET and will be titled "The Lightning's Course". Sam's yarn will be called "The Way Back", and is a futuristic treatment of Erich Maria Remarque's best seller, "Der Weg Zurtlck". Both yarns are illustrated by Forte, another up-and-ooming young man. The Cometeers have published the first issue of their official news organ. The title of the new mag is S̲o̲l̲a̲r̲ ̲P̲r̲e̲s̲s̲. Vol. 1, no. 1, is four mimeod pp on green paper, edited by James V. Taurasi and is entirely staff written. Illustrations and decorations are by the editor. Price is 5¢ a copy, 25¢ a year of six issues. DATE SET FOR NEWARK-CONFAB WILL POSITIVELY N̲O̲T̲ CONFLICT WITH THE DENVER WORLD STF CONVENTION!! TO BE KNOWN AS T̲H̲E̲ ̲S̲C̲I̲E̲N̲C̲E̲ ̲F̲I̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲F̲E̲R̲E̲N̲C̲E̲ On Sunday, May 4, 1941, in Newark, N.J. probably in Slovak Sokol Hall on Morris near Springfield Ave, will be held THE SCIENCE FICTION CONFERENCE of science fiction fans and professionals of the atlantic [sic] seaboard. The feature of this conference will be a barrage of questions with which the pros will bombard the fans in an effort to determine "\/hat Do You Want Us Do With STF?" After this session, fans, too, will have an opportunity to question the professionals in an effort to discover the inner workings of stf publishing. James V. Taurasi, F̲A̲N̲T̲A̲S̲Y̲ ̲N̲E̲W̲S̲ Associate, has been promoting this idea for some months, and it has made a big hit wherever presented. The pros are for it almost in a body. When the idea is presented to the fans, it is expected to go over with a bang. Every science fiction local society on the Atlantic Seaboard will be invited to sponsor this Conference. The Queens and Newark Science Fiction Leagues have already said they would cooperate. Invitations will be extended to (P. 2)
