PRICE TEN CENTS VOLUME 10 NUMBER 1 SUNDAY, AUGUST 22, 1948 WHOLE NUMBER 180 QSFL SPONSORS OF CONCLAVE THREE LOCAL CLUBS ACTIVE IN NEW YORK CITY Cole, Slavin, Gordon New Officers Of Centurian League Walter B. Cole and Rickey Slacin and Alan M. Gordon, all of Brooklyn, were elected President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively, of the Centaurian League at a meeting held in the home of Alan Gordon, former acting Treasurer, on Thursday, August 18, in Brooklyn, N.Y. The task of writing a constitution was completed at this meeting when all members present (about 12) ratified it by affixing their signatures to a copy. Future meetings will be devoted to discussing subjects pertaining to the criticism of science fiction as well as to speculative science. Interested fans should address the Secretary at 1626 Coney Island Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. At the meeting, Helena Schwimmer and Marcia Cohn announced that they were forming a new club to be known tentatively as the Bronx Science (continued on page two, column one) SPECTATOR CHIEF DECLARES HE IS IN FANDOM FOR PERSONAL GLORY AND THE MONEY HE CAN MAKE OUT OF IT. Lloyd Alpaugh of Somerville, N.J. answered "Yes" at the August meeting of the Queens SFL when asked by the Director "Are you in fandom because of the personal prestige and the money you can get out of it?" Alpaugh said he came to club meetings to be entertained and not to take part in serious discussions of problems pertaining to science fiction. SEPTEMBER 12 SET AS DATE OF ONE DAY GATHERING IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN Sunday, September 12, 1948 from 2:00 to 10:00 P.M. has been set as the date and time for a SCIENCE FICTION CONCLAVE to be held under the auspices of the Queens Science Fiction League as a one day fan gathering for those Eastern fans who could not attend the Torcon on July 3, 4, 5. A fantasy film, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" will be shown. There will be a full program featuring prominent authors, editors, and artists of science fiction magazines, as well as well-known fans. An entertainment is being arranged. A science fiction auction is now being gathered. A hall seating about 200 people has already been rented. It is located on 42nd Street in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Printed invitations are being mailed today mainly to fans on the Atlantic Seaboard, although a few courtesy cards will be sent to fan clubs and selected fans east and west of the Mississippi. A souvenir journal is being printed. Deadline for ads, boosters, and pictures is September 3. The journal will sell for 25[cents]. In accordance with universal fan custom, admission to the hall will be free. Proceeds of the auction will be used to defray the expenses of the sponsoring club. The committee consists of Alvin R. Brown, Walter R. Cole, Harry Harrison, Raymond Van Houten, Robert H. Rosen, James V. Taurasi, and Will Sykora. Inquires addressed to the Committee c/o FANTASY NEWS will be promptly answered.
