This you see, distinctly and factually gives the voter a chance to know exactly what he is desired to take into consideration when casting his ballot. Thus a new fan might well be the Number One for the past year, while a totally different fan not now near the top might well be the Number One in the all-time list, because of his tremendous activities and results obtained over a period of ten or more years. Second, FAVORITE ARTIST. This also, we believe, should be presented in several divisions: (a) In color, also subdivided into (1) Science Fiction, (2) Fantasy, (3) Weird; and (b) in black and white, also divided into the three separate divisions of Stf, Fantasy and Weird, it being well-known that there is a vast difference in the techniques required in all such work. I also believe there should be a separate division to include cartoonists and caricaturists. Third, FAVORITE FAN ARTIST. While color does not enter so much into this, I believe there should be several divisions in this category, so that the work of these artists can properly be evaluated and rated. Fourth, FAVORITE PRO MAG. I see six divisions needed here -- those now published, in each of Stf, Fantasy and Weird; and those all-time mags in the three divisions. This would allow fine mags that have been discontinued to receive votes which many voters do not now cast because the mags are not now published, and would probably change the results of the poll quite a bit. In your FAVORITE AUTHOR poll there would be quite a few divisions. For we have Science Fiction with the sub-divisions of (1) Novels, (2) Novelettes, and (3) short stories; The same divisions each for Fantasy, and for Weird, with possibly another for Off-Trail stories that are not properly within any of the above divisions. Also, in listing novels, there should be a provision made for the listing of series of novels, such as Campbell's "Arcot, Morey, Wade" series; the Smith "Skylark" or the Smith "Lensmen" series; the "Via" stories; the "Venus Equilateral" series; the Burroughs' "Martain, or Tarzan, or Pellucidar, or Venus" series, etc. Again, perhaps those stories generally considered Classics ought to be differentiated from these, one especially liked but which are not usually considered in the realm of Fantasy Classics. It is in the voting for FAVORITE FANZINE that the greatest number of chances for choice should be made, in order to get the correct feeling of fandom on the subject. 8
