There should be the Favorite Fanzine published within the past year; the Favorite Fanzine of all-time; the Favorite FAPAzine, and the Favorite VAPAzine. Newsheets should be listed separately, also other types that are highly specialized, and should not have to compete with general-type Fanzines; i.e., the Acolyte is weird-slanted; LeZ is (or was?) humor-slanted; Vom is purely a letter mag. In considering Fanzines for top honors, one should base his selection on a lot of different phases of publishing, such as material, format, regularity of publication; whether or not it is a subscription-zine or gratis; on the editing. Especially should one take into consideration the financial condition of the publisher ---- i.e., it is not fair to list the magazine of a mature, well heeled publisher as first merely because he has more pages, more lithos, printed covers, etc., as against that of a school-boy who perhaps manages to scrape up the money for one litho. All these items should be given proper consideration in making one's choice. Also to be considered is the magazine's value to fandom in both its present or current value, and its all-time value; the matter of distribution, i.e., the number of copies circulated, again taking into consideration the publisher's wealth or lack thereof; the method of duplication used; and how it is mailed ----- whether flat in envelopes, rolled, or folded or stapled so that perhaps it tears when opened. As said before, it is this observer's opinion that only by the use of such a complete and admittedly complicated poll can the real sense of fandom be secured on these important topics. Yet they are so important that I hope that some fan will take the time and trouble to prepare and send out such a poll, and that it be sent to as many of the fans as possible, not just to 75 or 100 of them. It should have a circulation of at least 250. And if any fan ever does take all this trouble, it is to be sincerely hoped that all fans will take the time and trouble to answer the poll, and vote on each question slowly, seriously and conscienciously. ...............E. EVERETT EVANS EDITORIAL COMMENT This article was written at my request only a few days after our talk about the polling situation in fandom today and I can only answer Everett's comments in the last two paragraphs by saying that FAN will conduct such a poll in the VERY NEAR FUTURE. I want the readers of FAN to have the oportunity to think over this article and send in their suggestions which will hep me to make up this FAN POLL. What have you to say, readers? 9
