SAPPHO - - the magazine of verse DAMN! AN EDITORIAL To be almost disgustingly honest, this editorial is the most pointless thing we ever wrote. Of course we realize that an amateur magazine of this nature is supposed to have at least a semblance of one, but we still think the whole deal is without reason. However, we recall that when the third issue of SAPPHO was mailed out as a subscription pub about six months ago without an editorial or even a contents page (horrors!) we received more letters complaining about their loss than we did concerning the actual contents... So, all you unlucky devils, here is your damned editorial, useless as it is. On the reverse side you'll have already spotted that blight on the first page of all fanzines, a contents page. Aaagh Poetry this issue is made up of various types of stuff and - - well - - stuff.. On hand is of course our favorite, Shirley Chapper, but the rest of the crop is new, quite new, and also quite promising. Graph Waldeyer kicked through with his two little items in the very nick of time, and then E Hoffman Price sent us off a Persian distich, original lingo and all! Even if you don't enjoy poetry, this translation should be an oddity of some little interest... By way of Fran Laney and R H Barlow came the translation from Horace. As we recall, Lovecraft had something to do with this ms, but we're cursed if we can remember what is way. Oh well... Then there's Fywert Kinge, whose poetry we've had around here for almost a full year now. We finally got around to putting out this fourth issue, though, and so here they are. James Russell Gray submitted his two pomes to us just in time for deadline. We like them... Clara Shanafelt's FANTASTIC is reprinted with the kind permission of no one in particular from The Little Review. Our second reprint - - EASTERN SKETCH - - first appeared in Fantasia and is reprinted with that magazine's editor's permission, Lou Goldstone... And that's about all concerning our contributors. At least, contributors for this issue. Necessarily, we must make a request for future issues. We would like to have at least twenty pages of poetry after this. Also, we realize that this issue is rather weak, perhaps more so than it should be, and for the next issue we would like to have some verse from Lowndes, Warner, and a few other FAPA mambers who can write poetry. We are hinting, gentlemen...and not too subtely... About our cover: It's an air brush job - - as you well know - - done by Jack Weidenbeck, of Slan Shack thing lends prestige to this rag, it's your work... And that is all, thank god!!! 4
