ALCHEMIST 13 when, through the progressive influence of utopian and idealistic science-fiction he is forced to seek some relationship with the world of reality and the possibilities therein. If he (or she) can find no basis for his (or her) dream castles then suicide (either violent physical suicide, as with the case of Daniels and Hatch) or mental suicide, as with the case of confirmed scientifiction-hobbyists, such as Sykora) is very likely at whatever crisis with reality the shattering of the illusion takes place. If on the other hand, he (or she) is led to the dynamic, positive idealism inherent in Technocracy's answer to "poverty in the midst of plenty" expressed within Michelist movement in science-fiction fandom, (or in other positive socially-constructive movements) then there occurs the second negation, the negation of escape, or the negation of the negation. However, this does not, as it might appear upon the surface put one back into one's original setting. The movement is one of a spiral nature, constantly moving in a given direction, rather than a merry-go-round movement of the closed circle. The science-fiction fan then, is a realist imbued with the soul-expanding strength of dynamic modern mythology, and the psychology of this individual has evolved from the "either-or" stage (either reality or fantasy) to the healthy and advanced "both-and" psychology (reality enriched with the strengthening qualities of fantasy). Only in this way can the dead end of physical or mental suicide with fascism, be avoided. We Support The Denver World's Science Fiction Convention Implicitly.
