JANUARY 1 1942. Snowed all day + windy. Sore throat. Kathryn + I only ones home. Mended hose, knotted fringe on Hilda's [Mex?] tablecloth. First weather report for weeks. 1943. After breakfast, Uncle Chris, Signe, Kathryn, Hans + I left at 7 - called on Amy + Carl Gessner at her mother's, Freeport, Ill. a half hour, got to Olga's after! for turkey dinner for 23. (195 Kott's). Girls went to Velma's overnight, H+ C to Hans' folks, I stayed. 1944 Roasted rabbit, made lime jello and apple crisp. Helped Kathryn make a cross word puzzle for Sig! Called on Mrs. Henkel while K went skating. We played anagrams till late. (Frank in Iowa). Wrote 7 and wrote Hans [dansk?]. 27° 55° 1945. Rainy - in Alexandria, Va. Didn't sleep well: too much noise on river + in apts. Hans at work as usual at FEA. Studied German + dansk. Began reading "Canal Town" by Samuel Adams Hopkins. Perry [Gribble?] + wife called. 25° 35° 1946 With first tires fit to drive on for months, Hans + I drove to Arlington, called on Burton Baker's, had tea, fruit cake, + promise of job for Hans, then on to Kirkpatrick's, where we had supper after seeing Ruth off for Madison.
