APRIL 8 1942 Up at 6 - fine day. Drove to Verona, from there I rode with Mesdames Hughes, Joos, Harris, Vaughn, + Argue to Fennimore to sub-district W.S.C.S. [elected?] alternate to Nat'l Methodist Assembly at Columbus [illegible] May 17. Led devotions with candle lighting service. [Home?] 6:45. 1943. Took Mrs. Johnston + Mrs Pierstorff to WSCS mtg. at Trousdale 10 to 4. Had devotions on "Joy" [illegible] many I knew. Sandwich lunch at noon. Miss Jessie [Pfoff?] of Rhodesia spoke. Fine day. 1944. Warmer. Unpacked canned goods. Baked layer cake to get used to baking [on?] gas stove. Cleaned dresser and unpacked part of trunk. Crocheted on Hilda's blue sleeve-trim. [illegible] to shop at grocery [illegible] blocks away. Studied dansk all eve. 1945. Walked to church + back. Sat in same pew as Bishop Lee. Read in "Green Dolphin St". Church in eve. First Baptist, built 1803 by Jeremiah Moore who "preached the gospel without a license" in Alex. defended [by?] Patrick Henry. Bishop Edwin Holt Lee preached. 1946. After breakfast, left Gilliam's at 7. Drove 399 miles. On Skyline Drive the middle section, but it rained + was thick, so I drove into Shenandoah Valley to Harriemburg then on 11 to Lexington, 60 to Charleston, W. Va. by 7:30. Much rain in [mts.?] So no pictures. Mts. lovely with dogwood + redbud (Judas trees).
