April 30 1942. 86° Shopped in 9 furniture stores in Madison- + bought 1 chair! Found steel K. cabinets in 1. Brought Signe home at 2 + she planted more garden. Frank took her home at 9. Very hot wind. Had first asparagus from garden. 1943. Chilly wind. Hans up + dressed, but I carried his breakfast in. Jay Whitson came from Oelwein. He + I ate lunch at cafeteria. Letter from K. card from Frank. Got Hans' sick leave signed by Dr. Raber. We left at 4. Nearly missed Wilbur's train at Bureau. Supper at Princeton. Couldn't get gas after 7, so slept at Polo. 1944. Third fine day in succession! Hans + I attended Christ Church (Episcopal) where Geo. Washington attended. Read a chapter in "[Danby?] Folk" etc. Hilda + Geo. R. here in eve to develop a film. Had cocoa + ice cream. 46° 64° 1945 K has 2 days off so we washed, inc. rug, blanket, quilt. Set out more tomato plants- I picked first lettuce. Baked bread. Mrs. Powers + I took garments to Esso station for UNRRA relief. 1946 Unpacked my 3 boxes of books in front sunroom. Shopped at "Piggly Wiggly" for girls- + got t.t. soap, etc. for taking to China. Lovely day. Wrote 7 circle Sig + I shopped- I got blue wool for blouse. Bea Gillen at Apt. for supper. I made the jello dessert. Finished 2 "sunbonnet girls" dishtowels.
