June 19 Sent Grandpa birthday card + necktie. 1942. Cleaned up the house, baked bread. Had first beets for dinner, more peas. Got Signe just before 5; we bought Thelma Carlton wedding tablecloth and Linen Mart. First rain this week. Got 7 circle. Met 6:30 bus but no Vera Carlton- till 10 o'clock bus. 1943 Started bread at 5:30. Did a little cleaning. Froze a pan of spinach. Took it to locker. + flowers to MacKenzie's. To Ann's wedding at Cong. church. Brot Arlene Morhoff + mother home. worked in garden-sprayed roses. 1944. 79° at 6. Shower at noon, but I got in my washing ahead of it. Did the ironing, and cut out a pinafore for myself! Studied dansk in eve. Rain in eve. Finished "Green Mansions" by WH Hudson 1945. Canned 5 pt. strawberries, did the ironing, also last week's. Florence + Marie took us to Democratic Women's Club in P,M. at Mrs. L.B. Schmidt's lovely home at north end of Franklin St. Came home past old "Hillside House." Jo + boys here in eve. In their garden. 104° 1946. HOT. I was awake from 4, for first time since I got to West. Ironed hour or so, did some of Lorraine's mending. Took nap- crocheted hdkf for Pauline W. All but Paul went to mid-week church. Rev. Beck, native Dane, preached.
